In 1957, he and his son-in-law started a private practice.
By 1962, FAMU Hospital was serving 90,000 blacks in a six-county area.
But after the 1964 Civil Rights Act, legislators began balking at paying for a separate hospital for blacks — and TMH began admitting black patients.
Brickler, 85, was the first black doctor admitted to practice at TMH. That was in 1965, and the pedetrician is still delivering babies at TMH.
In 1966, he was the first black person to run for the Leon County School Board (narrowly losing).
