In 1933 Doctor Earle Haas obtained a patent for a tampon he had devised from compressed surgical cotton.
Drugstores and department stores began selling the tampons, but in 1936 Ellery Mann formed Tampax Inc. and bought the rights to produce and market the tampons.
Tampax responds by creating our own formal education program to teach women about tampons and the best way to use them.In 1941 Tampax established the company’s first educational department.
Tampax refused to advertise on television until 1978.
And during 1980 hundreds of cases of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) were reported around the country.
Tampax Inc. became Tambrands Inc. in 1984, and the change in name seemed to signal a change of direction for the company--diversification.
Emmett announced in December of 1989 that Tambrands would restructure its program plan in order to boost performance and lower costs.
In 1993 the company introduced a 20-tampon package with a higher unit price than the 32-tampon package, but that put the package in the most popular price range of $2.99 to $3.29.
Emmett made a company goal of increasing its share of the United States market from 60 percent to 65 percent by 1994.
That groundbreaking new tampon was Tampax Pearl, which debuted in 2002 with a plastic applicator and rounded tip; it was an immediate success.
