Tampa Bay Buccaneers company history timeline

1976

League History 1976 - Present / National Football League

1977

After losing a league-record 26 consecutive games, the Bucs broke into the win column at New Orleans on December 11, 1977.

1979

In his nine-season career, Selmon was named to the NFC Pro Bowl team six times and was selected as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979.

Offensively, the 1979 Buccaneers were led by quarterback Doug Williams and running back Ricky Bell, who gained 1,263 yards.

As was the case in 1979, it took a dramatic 20-17 final-week win over the Detroit Lions to clinch the title.

1982

Although no divisional championships were awarded in the strike-shortened 1982 season, the Bucs qualified for postseason play for the third time in four seasons by winning five of their final six games.

1983

The 1983 campaign began a dubious streak of 12 consecutive seasons that saw the Buccaneers post double-digit loss totals.

1984

McKay retired as coach following the 1984 season after nine years at the helm of the Buccaneers ship.

1985

He bought out his contract with the Express after the spring season of 1985, but his NFL rights belonged to the equally hapless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

1987

In 1987 Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he worked as a backup to future NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana.

1991

When an elbow injury sidelined Montana in 1991, Young became the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

1994

He finished the 1994 season with a 112.8 passer rating, a mark he achieved on a scale where 100 was meant to be the realistic maximum.

1995

He capped this extraordinary run by leading the 49ers to victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX in 1995.

1997

For the 1997 season, the Buccaneers worked with the NFL to develop a more marketable and intimidating look in order to improve the team’s image.

In 1997 Young led the team to the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game, and two years later he was selected to his seventh Pro Bowl.

1999

When he retired in 1999, Young had a career passer rating of 96.8.

2002

During the 2002 league realignment, the Bucs joined three former NFC West teams to form the NFC South.

2005

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

2008

A late-season collapse by the team in 2008—the Bucs lost four consecutive games to close out the season after starting the year 9–3—led to the firing of Gruden and a massive coaching, management, and roster turnover in an attempt to rebuild the franchise from the ground up.

2010

Although the Bucs won 10 games in 2010 (but missed out on the playoffs), that rebuilding effort ultimately proved unsuccessful.

2020

Super Bowl LV was an American football game played to determine the champion of the National Football League (NFL) for the 2020 NFL season.

The Buccaneers shocked the football world in the 2020 off-season when the team signed quarterback Tom Brady in free agency, ending his 20-year career with the New England Patriots.

2022

Cowboys’ Dak Prescott says he’s in the best shape of his life ahead of 2022 NFL season
