Position Summary
This recruitment will fill multiple part‑time (8-20 hours per week) Research Assistant positions in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. The employees will assist in data analyses, engineering developments, and field work to support Dr. Jonathan Nash's Nash Research Lab in Corvallis, OR.
The research team studies ocean mixing dynamics in a variety of environments ranging from the open ocean to glacier faces. The project depends on developing and deploying autonomous craft (surface and underwater) carrying oceanographic instrumentation, and analyzing data collected by these instruments.
Students will assist with the development of autonomous craft and sensor systems and will work as part of a small dedicated team.
Position Duties
70% Data analyses and Engineering Support:
Analyze physical ocean and ice data using MATLAB or Python; help design, manufacture, and test electronic and mechanical sensors and components, including board and hardware assembly, testing for sea use, and diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues.
20% Meetings and Documentation:
Participate in and contribute to weekly meetings.
Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation on electronics and robotics systems.
May participate in short local field tests (e.g., one‑day Oregon Coast trips) and/or research cruises up to 3 weeks long during summer terms.
Be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university; pursuing a program or course of study.
Maintain Academic Standing; students on academic suspension are not eligible.
Meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
High School: regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program.
Undergraduate/Post‑baccalaureate: 6 credit hours per term.

Ability to remain calm and quickly evacuate children from the classroom in an emergency.
Ability to work within Agency policies and guidelines under the direction of a site supervisor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Mostly indoor classroom and bus riding environment.
Frequent outdoor supervision of children and monitoring pick up/drop off.
Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, creative substances such as paints.
Occasional exposure to body fluids/biohazards (such as saliva, vomit and urine).
