Almost 30 years ago to the week, in January of 1989, a massive avalanche crashed down the face of Kachina in the same area.
Finally, the Village was incorporated into a municipality during 1996, pushing it forward as one of the premier multi-season resort destinations in New Mexico and North America.
Bacon came to ski Taos in 1996, and like so many others, fell in love with the place.
In December 2013 it was announced that the Blake’s were selling their ski resort to Louis Bacon.
Barbara and Tom continued to operate El Mercado until 2014 when they decided to focus on running their Casa Benavides Bed and Breakfast just up the street.
Improvements include a Lift to Kachina Peak, which was completed in the summer of 2014.
New ownership in 2014 has lead to a revitalization of the resort, infusing it with new energy and capital investments.
Taos has set a starting wage at more than 30 percent above the state minimum wage of $7.50 an hour, and the ski valley’s charitable arm has donated an average of a quarter-million dollars a year in cash, goods and services to local causes since 2015, resort officials said.
Resort officials had no comment as to whether the men who died hiked to their starting point or rode the lift. It opened in 2015, signaling the new owner’s commitment to adventure skiing and to the memory of Mr.
In 2017, Taos Ski Valley opened a completely renovated Children’s Center with new play spaces and a re-graded beginner area.
