John Tarleton College opened its doors on September 3, 1899 with W. H. Bruce as president.
John Tarleton Agricultural College was founded in 1899 with an endowment from settler John Tarleton.
The 29 members of the class of 1963 were the first class to graduate with a bachelor's degree.
Tarleton gained status as a university in 1973 adopting its current name.
The first meeting of the trustees was held in Stephenville on December 12, 1978, where a discussion of the Foundation's organization, purposes, and goals were outlined.
On September 5, 1989 the Tarleton State University Development Foundation was granted non-profit corporation status, and changed its name to the Tarleton State University Foundation, Inc.
In 2003 it began offering doctoral programs.
The current Hunewell Bandstand is built and dedicated at Homecoming 2005.
