Tax Accountants are integral members of the Southern Company Services (SCS) Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting Team. This role reports to the Income Tax Accounting Supervisor and primarily supports the income tax provisions of both large corporate consolidations and partnership entities in accordance with ASC 740 for Southern Company GAS.
Major Job Responsibilities:
Calculation & review of differences between book (GAAP) and complex income tax positions, tax adjusting journal entries, & supporting workpapers, for both federal, state, & local authorities.
Calculate both the current year and future federal, state, & local income tax impacts due to changes in both statutory rates and apportionable state income changes.
Process actualization of complex sub-consolidations for both Federal and state income tax provisions versus final tax return filing positions ensuring reconciliation of income tax accruals.
Preparation and review of complex tax basis balance sheets, corresponding accumulated deferred income tax balances, through supporting reconciliations and supporting workpapers.
Effectively communicate drivers of year to date and year over year income tax variances to plan.
Identify information gaps and data flow problems, coordinate solutions for process improvements and efficiency, including assisting in both software design and implementation.
Actively engage in knowledge transfer, job training, mentoring, and guiding less experienced members of the team and organization on assigned projects.
Develop and manage relationships and communications between the Tax Accounting department and its stakeholders- Financial Reporting; Financial Planning; Tax Compliance; Accounting Research, Indirect Tax, Property Accounting, Internal and External Auditors.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting required, master's degree in accounting or tax preferred.
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in accounting for income taxes or corporate tax compliance. Accounting for income taxes is preferred.
Experience in tax compliance or provisioning is preferred.
Public accounting experience a plus.
CPA preferred.
Proven knowledge and recent professional experience in accounting and/or income tax compliance, with knowledge of GAAP and book/tax differences (ASC 740).
Regulatory accounting experience and knowledge of ASC 980 a plus, including preparation of both FERC Form 1 & FERC Form 2 filings.
Experience with Oracle ERP and advanced excel desired, and experience with UI Financial Planner, Alteryx, PowerPlan-Tax Provision is a plus.

We are looking for a Property Accountant to assume the role of financial expert for a designated portfolio of complex properties. This person will be responsible for providing timely and accurate reporting of the financial operations, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash management.

Conducts month end closeout process and prepares or assists in preparing financial statements, reports and analysis on OpenGov.
Posts adjustment entries and reconciles accounts; monitors budget status of accounts; reviews submitted accounting documents; and posts adjustments or forwards errors/misstatements to applicable parties for resolution.
Reconciles bank statements, balances activity statements, and research dishonored checks; prints applicable banking statements/reports; research outstanding items to their full extent; and prepares/sends correspondence and follows up on previous items with applicable parties to resolve outstanding items. Monitors daily bank account balances; maintains schedules of cash and investment accounts and records all transactions.
Assists Controller with the annual audit by preparing work papers, schedules and analyzing account balances.
Prepares special reports and financial analysis as requested by the Controller or the Chief Financial Officer.
Maintains City's capital asset records, including analysis, preparation and recording of all capital asset transactions, inventory reconciliations and required reporting.
Conducts professional accounting duties independently; interprets documents and makes appropriate adjustments and entries for non-General Fund.
Assists with contract/grant administration procedures; prepares/maintains spreadsheet of budgeted revenues and expenditures compared with actual revenue and expenditures; and advises appropriate personnel on unusual and/or significant variances.
Research information for customers and external auditors.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including reconciliation reports, reimbursement requests, receipts, grant reports, and financial analysis; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.
Supervises, trains and evaluates subordinate staff; analyze, evaluate and solve accounting and administrative problems
Maintains a current, comprehensive knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, principles and practices relating to government accounting, financial reporting and/or grant accounting and administration; maintains professional affiliations; and attends webinars, meetings, workshops, hearings, and training sessions as required; may provide related training and guidance to staff.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is required.
Two (2) years of experience is required or any combination of experience and education that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills.
