Summary:

Position Summary:
Incumbent will directly supervise two Accountant I positions located at Central Office. Primary duties of first Accountant I position process vouchers for KDOC Central Office. The other Accountant I position primarily processes Travel & Expenses for KDOC Central Office. Incumbent is responsible for training of staff supervised, which includes training on general accounting best practices, KDOC Internal Management Policies and Procedures, and all Department of Administration fiscal policies and directives which pertain to expenditures processed through SMART.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Manages the Accounts Payable section in the performance of its duties. Trains and supervises two Accountant I positions that enter AP vouchers in SMART for Central Office, as well as process/approve travel and expenses in SMART.
Approves accounts payable (AP) vouchers, including interfunds, in SMART for KDOC Central Office. Audits vouchers for appropriate coding and proper authorizations to ensure compliance with programs, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ensures payments are processed with the correct information and address for payment to suppliers. Assists central office staff in the resolution of difficult accounting problems associated with AP vouchers. Provides technical assistance and training to correctional facilities regarding accounting and fiscal procedures, as needed. Runs and reviews various AP and general ledger reports and processes (using SMART and other KDOC and State systems) prior to month end, to identify errors and error trends in the system. Identifies and resolves AP vouchers with an error status, matching exceptions, or budget errors to allow vouchers to continue through the cycle to reach paid status. Ensures payment data entered via the AP process is accurate for historical expenditure data in SMART and analysis by senior management for year-to-date budget status and formulation. Manages the Central Office travel program and Accountant I in the performance of travel management duties. Participates in the development of policies and procedures related to travel to ensure that operation and activities of the Fiscal Services section are in compliance with established accounting principles and objectives, state law, and policies and procedures developed by the Office of Accounts and Reports. Provides technical guidance and training regarding entering travel authorizations and expense reports into SMART. Manages the Juvenile Offender Trust Fund account.
Responsible for ensuring that all money held in trust for juvenile offenders is tracked and utilized by KDOC in accordance with the Social Security Administration rules and regulations. Posts transactions to subsidiary ledger deposits and payments made on behalf of youth in the custody of KDOC. Ensures cost of care expenses are paid from the Trust Fund for youth receiving benefits prior to utilizing state resources. Responsible for liaison work involving Social Security offices and case management agencies, including researching and resolving payment and non-payment processing issues. Audits all Juvenile Trust Fund transactions. Audits invoices from providers for appropriate cost coding and youth information using KDOC systems as well as validating provider billing rates, placement and service billing codes, multiple state and federal funding sources, and program cost accounts. Applies knowledge of programs and laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and other business rules in determining appropriateness of payment. Resolves discrepancies by referencing the payment handbook and coordination with local case managers and providers. Researches and resolves all problems and issues associated with the Juvenile Trust Fund. Provides reports and obtains information on provider payments to the Fiscal Officer as needed.
Responsible for KDOC asset management records. Supervises the semi-annual and annual physical inventory of capital assets and KDOC identified assets assigned to the Central Office Fiscal Services section. Establishes processes to ensure recording of vouchers paid are input into the Asset Management Module in SMART.
Responsible for KDOC Accounts Receivable (A/R) process. Including but not limited to, approving deposits and A/R interfunds. Ensures accurate coding and tracking of funds received by KDOC.
Performs miscellaneous duties as required.
* Must be capable of performing Essential Physical Functions (See attachment to Position Description).

Intern Tax Summer 2026| Kansas City
Tax Accountant Job 16 miles from Blue Springs
Description & Requirements As an intern at Forvis Mazars, you will gain valuable experience that may help you decide whether you want to start your career in audit or tax, or even whether public accounting is right for you. You will work on client engagements like those assigned to our entry-level associates, gaining exposure to a variety of industries, and testing out your technical know-how. You will work alongside our senior staff and management personnel, learning from their experience as you develop your skillset.
Depending on local office needs, internships are available in assurance, tax, or a combination of the two and can be part-time or full-time. Generally, winter semester internships run from early-January through April 15th, and summer internships can typically run from early-June through mid-August.
How you will contribute:
* Work with client personnel to reconcile account differences and analyze financial data
* Prepare individual, corporate, partnership, or other tax returns
* Calculate tax extension or estimate payments
* Participate in client meetings alongside Forvis Mazars partners and managers
We are looking for people who have Forward Vision and:
* Solid technical accounting knowledge
* Effective time management
* Strong oral and written communication skills
* Strong computer skills preferred, including Microsoft Office suite
* Ability to work well with a team as well as independently
* Problem-solving attitude
* Willingness to take initiative
* Close attention to detail
* Ability to work under pressure and against deadlines.
