Experienced Corporate Tax Accountant (ASC 740)

Tax Accountants are integral members of the Southern Company Services (SCS) Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting Team. This role reports to the Income Tax Accounting Supervisor and primarily supports the income tax provisions of both large corporate consolidations and partnership entities in accordance with ASC 740 for Southern Company GAS.
Major Job Responsibilities:
Calculation & review of differences between book (GAAP) and complex income tax positions, tax adjusting journal entries, & supporting workpapers, for both federal, state, & local authorities.
Calculate both the current year and future federal, state, & local income tax impacts due to changes in both statutory rates and apportionable state income changes.
Process actualization of complex sub-consolidations for both Federal and state income tax provisions versus final tax return filing positions ensuring reconciliation of income tax accruals.
Preparation and review of complex tax basis balance sheets, corresponding accumulated deferred income tax balances, through supporting reconciliations and supporting workpapers.
Effectively communicate drivers of year to date and year over year income tax variances to plan.
Identify information gaps and data flow problems, coordinate solutions for process improvements and efficiency, including assisting in both software design and implementation.
Actively engage in knowledge transfer, job training, mentoring, and guiding less experienced members of the team and organization on assigned projects.
Develop and manage relationships and communications between the Tax Accounting department and its stakeholders- Financial Reporting; Financial Planning; Tax Compliance; Accounting Research, Indirect Tax, Property Accounting, Internal and External Auditors.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting required, master's degree in accounting or tax preferred.
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in accounting for income taxes or corporate tax compliance. Accounting for income taxes is preferred.
Experience in tax compliance or provisioning is preferred.
Public accounting experience a plus.
CPA preferred.
Proven knowledge and recent professional experience in accounting and/or income tax compliance, with knowledge of GAAP and book/tax differences (ASC 740).

* Maintenance and gathering of exemption certificates for various indirect tax types (OneSource)
* Collaborate with Credit & Collections team on customer sales tax inquiries
* Collaborate with AP team on providing appropriate exemptions to suppliers and respond to inquiries

* Manages tax planning, accounting and work paper preparation process considering federal, state, local, and international tax implications.

Experience
* 2-4 years of experience in federal, state, and indirect tax preparation, compliance and research
Knowledge/ training (preferred):
* Experience with preparing tax provisions
* Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations
* Strong computer and technical skills including MS Office applications, advanced Excel skills required
* Experience preparing and filing federal and state income tax returns
* Experience preparing and filing indirect tax returns (sales/use, gross receipts, personal property, business license, etc.)
* Experience in Form 1099 reporting
* Experience with federal and state income tax compliance process
* Experience in all aspects of the sales & use tax compliance process
