The primary purpose of this position is to perform professional accounting functions for all University special funds, including bond funds, capital improvement funds, and other restricted funds designated under this classification. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all related financial transactions and records.
This position serves as the primary liaison with the Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM), the Office of the State Controller (OSC), University Budget Officers, account custodians, the Director of Design and Construction, and other units within the Division of Business and Finance.
The incumbent will interpret, apply, and implement policies and procedures established by the University, the State of North Carolina, and applicable federal agencies.
In addition, this position plays a key role in monthly, quarterly, and annual closeout activities, including reconciliation and financial statement preparation for capital and special funds, and contributes to the completion of the University's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Financial Reporting Department is a unit of the Comptroller's Office and provides current, comprehensive and accurate financial information to provide accountability and transparency to University, the people of North Carolina and beyond concerning its fiduciary resources.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate's degree in Accounting; or Associate's degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience ins higher education accounting is a plus.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Key Responsibilities

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree
10+ years of experience in healthcare/biopharmaceuticals in account management, sales, market access or an equivalent combination of experience and education
5 + years of experience in account management for Government Accounts (VA/DOD), including deep knowledge of key VA/DOD accounts and existing relationships at top VISN/VA/DOD facilities
Former military experience preferred

Job Summary:
The cost accountant position is accountable for the ongoing analysis of product costing, process constraints, margin analysis, and tracing costs back to underlying activities. The cost accountant must also construct and monitor cost-effective data accumulation systems needed to provide an appropriate level of costing information to management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Inventory
Coordinate physical inventory counts and cycle counts
Investigate cycle counting variances and resolve issues
Update standard costs in the bill of materials
Review standard and actual costs for inaccuracies
Validate the cost of goods sold as part of the month-end close
Accumulate and apply labor and overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles
Work with the materials review board to locate and dispose of obsolete inventory
Analysis
Conduct ongoing process constraint analyses and variance analysis for manufactured parts
Report on breakeven points by products, work centers, and factories
Report on margins by product and division
Report on variances and their causes, which includes spending variances related to purchased parts, labor rates, overhead spending
Analyze capital budgeting requests
Perform cost accumulation tasks
Perform Miscellaneous financial analysis as it relates to operational activities at the assembly locations
Education, Certifications, and Qualifications:
5+ years of accounting/finance experience / working in manufacturing / operations role
BA/BS degree, as well as excellent analysis skills, and the ability to collaborate with a multi-department team. Also helpful to have experience manipulating large databases.
IFS or SAP Costing experience a plus
Power user of Microsoft Excel.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to work across organization boundaries at all levels of the company to achieve the plant and corporate objectives.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and follow through to resolve outstanding issues.
Knowledge of US GAAP.

Revenue & Service Accounting (Services Focus)
* Monitor revenue recognition for service contracts in accordance GAAP
* Book revenue and cost accruals at the request of service-based accountants and reverse when needed.
Compliance & Controls
* Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements and tax filings (including income tax, sales tax, property tax and annual report/business registration filings)
* Maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies, and recommend enhancements as needed.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or experience in lieu of degree).
* 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in both service and manufacturing sectors.
* Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and financial reporting.
* Proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills (being able to demonstrate advanced Excel skills in the interview process as required).
* Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills:
