Taylor Rental Center was established in 1980 as a general rental store serving contractors, homeowners, industry, and do-it-yourselfers.
First, contractors lost an equipment deduction when the tax code was changed in 1986.
Marcia and Alan retired in 1988, but continue as stockholders of the parent company, Alan Neuwirth Rental Center, Inc.
In 1989 Brad Jacobs created United Waste Systems, Inc. with the intention of consolidating these small solid-waste companies into an efficient and profitable organization.

For 1999, United Rentals posted revenues of $2.23 billion, representing an 83 percent increase compared to the previous year.
2000: United Rentals enters e-commerce by opening a web site for E-Rental Store.
It bought the Alamo and National brands in 2007 precisely to expand its foothold in the airport market.
