Position Summary:

Maintain professional growth in accordance to high quality standards by completing required professional development trainings designated by Supervisor.

Summary:

JOB DESCRIPTION: Part-time Smart Start Assistant Teacher/Aide
Education and Experience: CDA and/or must be enrolled in an Early Childhood Education credential program or hold a degree in Early Childhood Education or another degree with 12 Early Childhood Education credits. Preference given to candidate with experience in the early childhood field and/or working with children with special needs.
Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following:
*Responsibility to the Classroom Teacher:
responsible for
carrying out duties and assignments in accordance with instructions from the Smart Start Teachers, informing the Smart Start Teachers of observations on the needs of the children. Assisting the Teachers in maintaining the NAEYC classroom portfolio.
*Implementation of the Daily Program:
responsible for
assisting Teachers with classroom activities and routines, conducting activities in line with interests and abilities, setting up centers, and preparing needed materials and supplies, helping with general cleaning/organizational responsibilities.
*Responsibility for Children:
responsible for
considering individual children in relationship to their cultural and socioeconomic background, treating all children with dignity and respect, helping children become aware of their roles as integral members of a group, assisting in the ongoing evaluation procedures needed to assess the developmental levels of the children by observing and recording learning experiences/collecting work samples/photo documentation, supervising children when the Teacher(s) is(are) out of the room. Maintaining an adult-to-child ratio of 1:10 or better at all times.

participating in staff meetings, participating in all required trainings (First Aid, CPR, Administration of Medication, Epi-pen, Serving Children with Disabilities, Pre-Literacy, Diversity, Curriculum and Assessment, 2 choices of Early Childhood Education topics) and recommended training programs, courses, and conferences, learning and following ECERS, NAEYC and Smart Start policies/guidelines.

Vacancy is in the Early Learning Centers of the Department of Families, Children, and Youth. Under supervision, performs a wide range of supportive functions in the operation of the City's Early Learning Center including some instructional assignments of limited scope and complexity. Assists teachers by manipulating instructional or play devices, and by assembling and setting up materials to be used in the activities of the day; Assists in the conduct of controlled and free play activities for children; Assists on off-site activities outside the Early Learning Centers and by carrying on separate activities for several children apart from main group activities; Implement lesson plans as needed; Reports to the teacher about any unusual behavior or other problems observed in children; Complies with reporting requirements including maintaining relevant documentation and record keeping; Ensures positive mental, physical, and developmental outcomes; Attends meetings and trainings included but not limited to: staff meetings, parent meetings, and staff training; Assist children in daily tasks such as, removing and putting on outdoor clothing, tying shoes, getting ready for lunch and nap periods, and assisting younger children in toiletry and hygienic functions as required. Assist in serving and recording lunch and snack periods and assist in keeping rooms and equipment clean, safe, neat, and orderly; Monitoring children during in class and out of class activities such as educational instruction, play, snack, and lunch.

This is a 1716 union position. The hours of work for this position are 40 per week.
This is a grant-funded position renewable on an annual basis. The City of Hartford is not obligated to fund this position upon termination of funding.
The examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and may include a written test, an oral test, a performance test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. This examination and employment process are subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations. The examination is designed to measure:
Knowledge of:
* Basic principles and methods of supervising pre-school children;
* Basic health, personal hygiene and safety precautions to be taken in dealing with children.
Ability to:
* Instruct children in games, simple crafts, and various play activities;
* Maintain order and address minor behavioral problems that arise in children's activities;
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents and other employees;
* Work independently and implement instruction
Open to all qualified applicants who meet the following qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of work experience in child care;
OR
A high school diploma or GED and the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential;
OR
A high school or GED and twelve (12) credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Special Education, or a closely related field.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Incumbents hired based on a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year on experience must obtain twelve (12) credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Special Education from an accredited college or University within a maximum of one (1) year from date of appointment OR obtain and maintain a current Child Development Associate (CDA) in center-based preschool or infant/toddler settings within a maximum of one (1) year from date of appointment and maintains certification thereafter.
An employee who fails to obtain the specified credits or obtain and maintain certification as specified above shall either return to his/her former or comparable position, if available or will be administratively separated.
