SUMMARY
Supports program staff in maintaining a quality learning environment in which each child achieves his/her highest level of social competence and intellectual growth needed for primary school or other child development facilities. Performs any combination of following instructional tasks in classroom to assist teacher.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Primary
1. Assists in daily planning and implementing daily activities and program for classroom with the teacher.
2. Develops a working relationship with parents of the children.
3. Assists in record keeping and documentation.
4. Attends pre-service and in-service training provided for staff.
5. Assists teacher in following daily lesson plans.
6. Assists teacher in implementing the Head Start goals, objectives and concepts as set forth in the Head Start Performance Standards.
7. Assumes leadership of class in teacher's and assistant teacher's absence. Assists teacher in assessing children.
8. Assists teacher in writing individual records.
9. Assists teacher in writing anecdotal records.
10. Assists teacher in doing daily health check.
11. Performs any other duties designated by the teacher.
12. Ensures that children are accounted for by visually verifying child's presence and marking bus roster.
13. Physically supervises children in classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and on playground. Assists children in the restrooms if needed.
14. Assists teacher in computer data entry.
Secondary
1. Assists in transporting children by serving as a monitor as assigned.
2. Accompanies teacher on home visits when needed.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Education and early childhood development
Ensures that the education environment is developmentally and linguistically appropriate, recognizing that children have individual rates of development as well as individual interests, temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles.
Ensures that the education environment supports the development of all children's social and emotional development, cognitive, language skills, and physical skills.
Implements a curriculum that recognizes the need for individualized activities, integrates the educational aspects of all program areas, helps to develop children's facility in social relationships, enhances each child's understanding of self, and provides for the development of cognitive skills.
Involves parents in the development of the program's curriculum and approach to child development and education, and participates in staff-parent conferences and home visits. Ensures parents have opportunities to observe their children and to share these assessments with staff to plan learning experiences.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), EDU 119, or CDA Credential, and one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must pass an annual physical, TB screening, and submit to random drug screenings.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Incumbent must have a Child Care Credential II, & I (EDU 119), or a CDA Credential and maintain a valid state issued driver's license, and have current certification for CPR and First Aid.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Incumbent must demonstrate a working knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, NC Day Care Regulations, and operation of a desktop computer, related software, printer, copier, fax, and phone, washer, dryer, and vacuum.

Depending on how the Principal advertises the vacancy, the Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant position may require duties below in more than one area. Each area is an essential function.
Behavior Support This employee will participate in staff development and training to gain knowledge of procedures specific to students with behavioral challenges including Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. The employee in this position will prepare a variety of materials and operate the office equipment necessary to prepare these materials. They will participate in the regularly scheduled Behavior Support Team meetings.
In addition to the Common Competencies and Physical Requirements, the employee in this role: • Provides support to the teacher of students who have behavioral needs and require intensive intervention in order to meet IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals and have success in the general curriculum. • Demonstrates knowledge of the stages of child development. • Communicates effectively to develop positive relationships with school personnel and students. • Assists teachers of exceptional children in the classroom and non-classroom settings to develop behavior management strategies and behavior intervention plans. • May be required to participate in bus driver training and become a licensed Bus Driver. Visually Impaired Classes In addition to the Common Competencies and Physical Requirements, the employee in this role: • Accompanies one or more blind students throughout the school day, providing necessary assistance and ensuring safety. • Obtains Braille books and materials for students, and ensures that they have the materials needed for each class. • Reads information on the board to students; describes activities going on in the classroom or at assemblies.
VI Teacher Assistant Duties • Work with students with visual impairments to review skills introduced by the teacher for the visually impaired. • Work with small groups of students with visual impairments to assist with introducing new lessons and/or reinforcing skills. • Be willing to travel between schools to work with students or deliver materials. • Assist in preparing materials that are specific to students who are blind or visually impaired. • Assist the teachers for the visually impaired in conducting functional vision assessments and learning media assessments.
Job Coach • Under close supervision assist in the acquisition of job skills and job development, as well as monitor the on-the-job performance of students with disabilities. Assist the classroom teacher in planning, organizing, and implementing the instructional program. Provide support for clerical, technical, and general classroom functions. Report to the classroom teacher, building principal, Transition Facilitator, and EC Program Administrator. • Work to resolve obstacles to student work performance, e.g., social interaction conflicts, transportation issues, and changes in job expectations. • Participate in Transition Team Meetings for the purpose of providing information on student progress toward IEP transition goals. • Conduct data collection (evaluations, hours, etc.) as the student develops job skills, moves to indirect monitoring while role-modeling employee behaviors. • Work to resolve obstacles to student work performance, e.g., social interaction conflicts, transportation issues, and changes in job expectations. • Transport students during regular school hours, as required, via the school system transportation program. (Sub) Bus Driver In addition to the Common Competencies and Physical Requirements, the employee in this role: • Adheres to all components of the Bus Driver Agreement • Follows all parts of the Bus Driver Handbook • Eagerly accepts special driving assignments • Completes all bus reports accurately as assigned

Purpose: Lake Norman Charter (LNC) is a K-12 public charter school that provides a rigorous and comprehensive educational environment to develop students with a focus on college readiness, leadership, and social responsibility.
An Elementary School Teacher Assistant provides support to a lead teacher in charge of a classroom by reinforcing lessons through tutoring individual students or small groups, documenting progress, providing supervision of students, and preparing lesson materials/learning spaces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists teachers with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating instructional activities.
Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts small group lessons for students; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
Plans, prepares, and delivers engaging Leveled Literacy Interventions (LLI) for small groups of students.
Maintains records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages positive behavior.
Supervises students in non-classroom activities such as carpool, lunch, recess, etc.
Communicates, consults, and cooperates with other members of the school staff to ensure student success.
Performs various clerical duties as needed (grades student papers and scores tests, makes copies, develops classroom display and instructional materials, etc.)
Participates in training related to performing job duties.
Performs related tasks as required or directed by the building principal.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent certification
Bachelor's degree in Education or relevant field preferred
Preference for previous teaching, tutoring, or coaching experience

Essential Functions
Teaches and implements IEP goals and NCSCOS lessons and extensions.
Performs non-academic activities such as lunch, encore, recess, etc.
Outside classroom duties including car, bus, and hallway duties.
Provides self-help and medical support as needed.
Assists with the management of instruction and behavior.
Assists with provision of individualized instruction and instructional monitoring.
Assists teacher with preparation for instruction.
Helps assure that students are properly supervised at all times.
Manages behavior through approved methods, as established by teacher and IEP team
Helps students with personal care and hygiene needs.
Maintains medication logs according to regulations and administer insulin shots if needed.
Performs related work as required.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and lifting, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling.
Work has standard vision requirements.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
