Position Summary
The primary location of this position is on-site in Cullowhee, NC. This position is designated as being exempt from the State of North Carolina Human Resources Act (EHRA).
This position advances institutional retention and persistence goals by supporting instructional development, contributing to curriculum design, and informing assessment practices for retention-focused courses and initiatives. The position contributes expertise in pedagogy, assessment, and student development theory to ensure that student success programming is evidence-based, data-informed, and aligned with institutional priorities. This position also collaborates in cross-campus initiatives that support belonging, persistence, and graduation outcomes.
Responsibilities include:
* Co-facilitating instructional training and professional development for First-Year Experience (FYE) and Academic Recovery instructors
* Collaborating on the development, revision, and refinement of curriculum for FYE and Academic Recovery courses, including alignment of learning outcomes, assessments, and instructional materials.
* Serving as a consulting resource on best practices in pedagogy, student development, and high-impact practices
* Leading AI initiatives for student success to ensure accuracy, tailored guidance, and alignment with academic policies
* Evaluating the effectiveness of courses and initiatives using student outcomes, assessment data, and faculty/student feedback
* Assisting in developing and implementing assessment plans for student success programs
* Collaborating with faculty, advisors, and campus partners to implement retention-focused initiatives
* Supporting OSR's foundational objectives of targeted support for at-risk students, policy oversight, and data driven improvements to cross-campus student success initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications

* 2 years of experience in education supporting students, including teaching, advising, or student support services

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BUS LICENSE:
Requirements: Must be 21 years of age with HS diploma or GED; possess a valid Class A or B with a "P" and "S" endorsement; meet vision and hearing requirements; acceptable driving record; must be insurable; must pass background and pre-employment drug screen.
1. Conduct a thorough pre-trip (using the school's Daily Bus Inspection form) and post trip inspection of the school bus.
2. Keep exterior mirrors clean and adjusted at all times.
3. Perform a minimum of one school bus evacuation drills each school year utilizing appropriate emergency procedures per semester. (This must be documented in the checklist log)
4. Know, recognize, and obey road signs and signals by meanings, shapes, sounds, and colors.
5. Keep interior of the bus clean.
6. Maintain routes and schedules as planned by the local school board.
7. Report any hazards along the existing route to appropriate school officials.
8. Exercise the effective defensive driving skills of self-control, alertness, foresight and good judgment at all times while operating the school bus.
9. Maintain discipline on the school bus without jeopardizing safety while driving.
10. Complete all reports on bus discipline, bus maintenance and any other reports required by the school board.
11. Remain alert at all times to hazards, including but not limited to poor weather conditions, other vehicles, road conditions and trains at railroad crossings.
12. The driver shall not, at any time, permit students to stand in the step well or loading area or where the student could likely fall out of the bus, if the rear emergency door was opened, or where the driver's view is obscured.
13. At such time, as required by law and/or the school, the employee agrees to one mandatory drug test as part of the hiring process. In addition to the mandatory test, the employee agrees to random test(s) and post accident testing and to be tested if recommended by the driver's supervisor

Position Overview
Outdoor education is central to Kanuga's mission. Responsibilities
Outdoor Educators are responsible for:
Demonstrating enthusiasm for environmental education and team building for young people and adults.
Establishing positive connections with learners of all ages, as well as chaperones and teachers.
Adapt customizable lesson plans based on their teaching style, learners' age, and Kanuga's curriculum.
Fostering an inclusive learning environment.
Identifying and responding to the states and needs of learners
Participating in and contributing to Kanuga's professional community of educators.
Conducting 6-8 three-hour teaching blocks each week for MTOS groups.
Leading 2-3 evening programs each week for MTOS groups.
Skillfully delivering Kanuga's experiential education curriculum.
Attending all school and group orientations.

Outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions, including sun, rain, heat, and cold.
Regular belaying duties during climbing activities.
Standing, walking, kneeling, and bending for extended periods while leading or assisting with programs.
Hiking up to 3 miles while leading a group and carrying a backpack with necessary supplies.
Additional Position Details
On-Site Housing: Includes private bedrooms, shared bathrooms, kitchen access, laundry facilities, porches, and access to 12 miles of hiking trails and 1,400 acres of natural woodlands and lakes.
On-Call Duty: Educators living on-site are required to serve as on-call staff as assigned.
