Teacher Aide Department: Head Start

Purpose: Assists the Lead Teacher in all facets of center activities, carrying out lesson plans, conducting family visits and parent-teacher conferences, incorporating education, disability, health, mental health, family and attendance component plans, completing screenings, assessment and reports, and leading large and small groups of children.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
Develop and maintain a positive relationship with the children, their families, staff, and volunteers.
Assist in preparation of materials as needed to carry out the weekly lesson plans.
Will eat and interact with children at mealtimes, serving as an appropriate model to the children.
Provide support in all areas of the classroom maintaining a welcoming and cheerful environment; may assist conducting developmental screenings, observations of children's behavior, and in developing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each child, including evaluations.
Attend staff meetings, assist in developing the weekly lesson plans, and overall program activities (e.g., arts and crafts, dramatic play, story time, cooking, music, fine and gross motor, etc.).
Manage small groups of children, and evaluate activities regarding appropriateness and effectiveness and interest of the children;
Assist the Lead Teacher in making smooth transitions for children, within the classroom and between organizations.
May attend parent committee meetings as requested (may include evening and weekend meetings).
Will maintain up-to-date files for all children, safeguarding privacy of records and confidential information.
May assist in recruiting and conducting parent orientations to enrolling eligible children by collecting all needed records.
Assists with janitorial duties (e.g., cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, mopping or vacuuming floors, cleaning toys, equipment, washing windows, emptying trash, light maintenance, and yard work) to maintain a safe and clean environment.
Assist in keeping the building and playground area in safe condition and good repair at all times, and observe all fire and sanitation code requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Possess a current First Aid/CPR certificate.

*HS Performance Standards state: a program must ensure Head Start Preschool assistantteachers, at a minimum, have a CDA credential or a State-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential, are enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree or, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.

Job Summary
The Kindergarten Paraprofessional Educator assists the classroom teacher with duties related to classroom activities, student supervision. Work involves a variety of clerical tasks and student monitoring. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
* A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
* Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
* Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
The following are preferred:
* Knowledge of first aid.
* Experience in typing and general clerical work.
* Ability to work with people of all age levels.
* Ability to effectively convey explanations of policies, regulations, and procedures.
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Essential Job Functions
* Prepares class materials at direction of the teacher.
* Sets up class projects using guidelines established by the teacher.
* Handles routine reports needed to complete informational requirements.
* Records grades as assigned by the teacher.
* Checks attendance for assigned classes and assists with discipline for students as required.
* Aids pupils in carrying out routine practice exercises assigned by the teacher, including listening to pupils read.
* Assists with assembling and putting materials on display.
* Assists with supervision of pupils on the school grounds.
* Assists with supervising a student or group of students during lunch and recess periods, both indoors and outdoors.
* Checks objective tests and marks errors but does not determine final grades.
* Types letters, requisitions, inventories, cards, bulletins, bills, reports, ledgers, stencils, transcripts, tests, notices, and other administrative teacher and student materials.
* Maintains student and teacher files.
* Supports the Anchorage School District's position of valuing diversity, promoting respect, and maintaining standards of confidentiality.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
