Position: Art Teacher
Reports to: Camp Director
Time Commitment: M-F (40 hours/week, 8am-4pm); 6/1/26 - 7/31/26
Compensation: $18/hr
PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Day Camp Art Teacher inspires creativity, self-expression, and confidence in
campers through engaging, age-appropriate art experiences. This role includes planning, prepping, and
leading projects, managing art supplies and studio space, supporting counselors, and contributing to the
fun and inclusive energy of camp.
Responsibilities & Expectations
Professionalism & Collaboration
● Arrive well-rested, on time, and maintain consistent attendance for the full 8-week session.
● Communicate absences with advance notice whenever possible.
● Build positive and professional relationships with campers, their families, and staff.
● Uphold The Discovery School Day Camp philosophy, policies, and values.
● Approach challenges with creativity, problem-solving, and a sense of humor.
● Maintain confidentiality for sensitive information about children and families.
● Model conflict resolution by addressing issues directly and collaboratively.
● Manage the art art room/studio environment: prepare supplies, supervise campers, monitor safety,
and oversee clean-up after each session.
Health & Safety
● Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers.
● Document incidents and communicate with parents/guardians when appropriate.
● Follow all camp health and safety guidelines and state regulations regarding abuse or neglect.
● Remain calm and follow emergency plans in the event of an incident.
● Be able to lift, move, or assist children (~50 lbs) as necessary.
Operational Responsibilities
● Implement creative, age-appropriate art lessons (drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, mixed
media, etc.).
● Lead daily art instruction sessions for camper groups, guiding them through the creative process
from concept to completion.
● Supervise campers during each art class and transitions to maintain safety and positive behavior.
● Organize and maintain art supplies: inventory, prepare materials before classes, and ensure
clean-up after activities.
● Facilitate group and individual instruction; adapt projects to different ages, abilities, and learning
styles.
● Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to campers.
● Foster a creative, inclusive, and respectful environment that encourages self-expression and artistic
exploration.
● Work closely with camp counselors to coordinate supervision and programming.
● Download and use the Jumbula app to access camper profiles and communicate with families.
● Maintain a safe, organized, and inviting maker space/studio.
● Follow positive discipline practices and the Code of Conduct in the staff and family handbook.
● Report any signs of illness, injury, or emotional distress to the director.
● Be inclusive of children with disabilities or special needs; adapt activities as outlined in
Individualized Camper Plans.
● Demonstrate full range of motion to lift, reach, squat, climb, sit, and fully participate in activities.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Must be 18+ years of age.
● Must have a love and willingness to serve children and their families.
● Strongly support and execute The Discovery School Day Camp's mission.
● Obtain all necessary clearances (linked below)
● Prior experience working with children (in a classroom, camp, after-school program, or similar
environment) preferred
● Good organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work cooperatively with other staff, volunteers, camp leadership, and families.
● Patience, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with children and nurturing their
creativity.
● High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Art, Education, Fine Arts, or
related field preferred
● Be willing to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification during training week.
● Be able to manage multiple priorities and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
● Have the social skills necessary to relate to a variety of people in a highly collaborative
environment, remaining positive even under stressful situations.
