Students will be given the chance to explore writing as a means of discovery and learning as well as a means of communication. Each class will help to analyze rhetorical situations: that is, to understand the conventions at work in various situations and the kinds of arguments and evidence that are persuasive in different contexts, including research. Students will have the chance to develop their strengths as writers of academic prose while working to identify and improve weaknesses. Students will also explore various modes of creative writing through weekly exercises and a final project.
The Writing Teacher will utilize the Writers Workshop model to create a community of writers and teach the writing process involving strategies for generating ideas, revising, and editing. The course will require a significant amount of writing, which may include informal writing such as journaling and personal reflections, as well as more formal papers. Students will write both in-class and take-home essays.
This specific course focuses on preparing students for writing at a high school level. Students will learn how to craft a thesis supported by specific evidence from texts to articulate a concise and coherent argument while simultaneously adhering to the grammatical guidelines expected in rigorous high school environments. These writings will be evaluated based on similar standards to high level tests including the ISEE, SAT, and ACT.
This is a contract position for the Summer of 2025 (six weeks from June 23 through August 1) that will require some preparation and orientation time during the month of June.

Job DescriptionDescription:
The Children's Home of Pittsburgh is seeking a Full-Time Teacher's Aide for Child's Way, our daycare center for medically fragile children. Child's Way is open from 6:30am - 5:30pm, Monday - Friday. This full-time position works 40 hours per week. No weekends, nights, or holidays.

Requirements:
MIMIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Must have attained one of the following qualification levels:
A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate.
A minimum of an 8th grade education and enrollment in training curriculum. The classroom training portion of the curriculum shall be completed. Documentation of completion of classroom training and continuing enrollment in the training curriculum shall be included in the staff person’s file.
A minimum of an 8th grade education and 2 years of experience with children.
2. Ability to organize, prioritize, and communicate appropriately.
3. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively and positively communicate and cooperate with children, family members, physicians, other staff, and visitors.
4. Emotional and mental ability to perform effectively and efficiently under stressful and emergency situations.
5. Cognitive ability to utilize basic knowledge of growth and development in interactions with children and families.
6. FBI Background Check, PA State Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance, Mandated Reporter, National Sex Offender Registry clearances.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:
1. Two or more years of experience working with children.
2. Prior experience working with children in a childcare setting preferred.
