Through study and discussion of literature and practice of writing, students become close readers and creative, critical thinkers. Students use the shared, enthusiastic exploration of literature to better understand themselves, engage empathetically with others, and develop meaningful connections.
Students in English 6 explore a variety of genres to better understand the complex relationship between language and power. While employing increasingly sophisticated approaches to reading a text, students reach beyond their literal interpretation of setting, plot, and characterization to evaluate themes, symbols, and the use of figurative language. Along with active close reading, students craft narrative and analytical texts to communicate their ideas. In addition to writing, students demonstrate their understanding and express themselves creatively through various project-based assignments and classroom discussions.
6th Grade Course Theme
The theme for this course is Power. Each unit will highlight a different form of power, inviting students to grapple with big questions. While the literature varies greatly in style and genre, each piece of literature is grounded in the following essential questions:

Who has power? How can we change the balance of power?
How can we empower ourselves and others?
