Skydance Games is looking for a Lead Character Artist who will lead and mentor a team of internal and external artists to create high quality character and creature models for our next project. As an experienced artist, the Lead Character Artist will use their expert-level understanding of the principals and mechanics of character art and a strong technical understanding of art pipelines to guide and grow their team's capabilities. Within this role, the Lead will work closely with the Art, Design and Animation Directors to align the character art team's workflows and priorities to the needs and vision of the project.

Responsibilities
* Modeling, sculpting, texturing, and assembling highly creative character models that must adhere to strict technical guidelines.
* Working closely with the project art director and animation director to drive the long-term development goals and daily operations of the character art team.
* Provide constructive feedback during the design phase of character concepting to achieve the best possible results with aesthetic, performance, and rigging considerations.
* Take top level ownership of all character art pipelines and workflows within the project including those specifically associated with hero props and weapons.
* Organize, manage, and mentor Internal team members and manage relationships with 3rd party external contractors.
* Ensure that all documentation for character art related workflows is organized, current, and understood by the team.
Requirements
* 5+ years professional game development experience.
* At least 1 shipped title credited with a lead character art position.
* Experience using a dynamic PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflow.
* A strong knowledge of artist tools and workflows for character asset creation.
* Excellent communication skills and genuine desire to impower those on your team to do their best work.
Pluses
* Some experience with project management and team capacity tracking software would also be a significant plus.
* Open mind regarding the thoughtful integration of emerging technology into the creative process.
The annual salary range for this position in Los Angeles is $120,000 - $140,000. The salary offered may vary based on the candidate's location, qualifications, experience and relevant expertise, among other factors. The range indicated is for base salary only and does not reflect the total compensation package, including bonus, benefits, etc.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Produce high-quality concept art and multiple design iterations for environments, props, and world-building elements that align with the project's artistic vision.
Design and conceptualize immersive environments that support storytelling, gameplay, and world cohesion.
Create storyboards for Combat and VFX teams to visualize weapon skills, abilities, and progression.
Develop dynamic environment mood paintings, lighting studies, color keys, and color scripts.
Ensure all concepts adhere to artistic standards and maintain visual cohesion across teams.
Communicate design intent to stakeholders, incorporating feedback to refine concepts efficiently.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL
Bachelor's degree in Art or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
5+ years of professional experience as a concept artist in game development.
Strong foundation in anatomy, shape language, composition, lighting, color theory, and visual storytelling.
Expertise in creating high-quality concept art that conveys the vision and mood of the game.
Highly proficient in Photoshop and other digital tools.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and deliver high-quality work on schedule.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and time-management skills.
Ability to give and receive feedback constructively and professionally.

Responsibilities:
Independently create and implement high quality, performant, and visually compelling VFX Assets/Tools/Systems for games- including real time particle systems, textures & texture atlases, shaders/materials, and scripting/Blueprints as needed
Work closely with designers, engineers and related artists to design, implement, and troubleshoot VFX
Be a self starter who meets deadlines and actively collaborates with team on VFX goals, prioritization, and scheduling
Seek out, troubleshoot, and fix performance issues
Maintain a meticulous, organized approach to creating, documenting, and sharing VFX for the team

Requirements:
Portfolio of work demonstrating proficiency in creating and implementing real-time VFX using Niagara in Unreal Engine
Proficiency in creating VFX Assets using advanced techniques like fluids/pyro/etc in a software package like Houdini/Embergen/Maya/Max/Blender/etc
Deep knowledge of vector math, real time lighting, post FX, shaders, and real time performance issues
Proficiency with Unreal Engine Blueprint for implementing VFX and creation of VFX Systems and Tools
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Digital Art, related field or equivalent work experience
5+ years of experience working in game development or related field
At least 2 or 3 shipped AAA game as a VFX or Technical Artist
