The Surgical Technician Student Intern provides direct and indirect technical care to surgical/obstetric patients along the continuum of the age spectrum facilitating the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Follows established practices and standards. Supports the mission statement, policies and procedures of the Valley Baptist Health System. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. Currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Tech degree program.

Job Summary and Qualifications
As a Surgical Technologist Extern, you'll gain invaluable hands-on surgical experience while working alongside a highly skilled team committed to caring for and improving human life - who are eager to welcome you into our mission. Under the guidance of the Circulating RN and experienced surgical staff, you'll expand your skills by assisting throughout the surgical process and helping ensure the surgical suite remains clean, organized, and focused on patient safety.
What you will do in this role:
* Shadow and observe licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons to gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
* Assist in preparing operating rooms, ensuring they are clean, sterile, and well-stocked with the necessary equipment and supplies.
* Help with the transportation of patients to and from the operating room under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional.
* Observe and learn proper surgical aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
* Assist with the preparation and handling of surgical instruments and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed Surgical Technologist.
* Provide basic patient care and comfort, such as answering questions, providing reassurance, and ensuring patient privacy.
* Participate in educational opportunities, such as attending workshops, seminars, or training sessions, as directed by the supervising Surgical Technologist or department manager.
What qualifications you will need:
* Current enrollment in an accredited surgical technology program Required
* Completion of prerequisite coursework in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and medical terminology. Required
