Job Roles and Responsibilities Leads R&D team applying knowledge of catheter tracking technology (Electro Magnetic, optical and/or impedance based) and complex electromechanical systems such as enteral feeding pumps and devices Supports and/or leads animal studies, bench testing, and clinical evaluation. Partner with industry thought leaders and Avanos commercial team to gain market insights & define unmet clinical needs. Break down complex problems into actionable learning plans that inform solution concepts. Propose solution concepts to complex technical and clinical problems with no precedence. Research technological pathways & propose viable concepts that address clinical needs. Define portfolio & technology roadmaps in collaboration with internal business partners. Forecast future scientific and competitive developments to inform product roadmaps. Drive technology enablement & lead development of product solution concepts from clean sheet. Lead the Development of Proof of Principle, Proof of Concept and Engineering Prototype models. Implement early principles and concepts with prototype software and hardware. Ensure systematic conversion of user needs into solutions w/consideration of business objectives. Drive informed decision-making processes through VOC insights and detailed trade studies. Conduct technical & clinical studies with a fail-fast approach to confirm technology capabilities. Conduct technical assessments to advance internal capabilities in addressing unmet needs. Present innovation concepts to internal business stakeholders Create models and theories that explain complex problems & reconcile discrepant data. Coordinate execution of technical project objectives across disciplines where necessary Identify and characterize key technical and project risks early in the project lifecycle. Develop mitigation strategies to retire technical risks and keep projects on schedule. Communicate to management when project conflicts arise and propose alternate options. Support translation of patient risks and customer requirements into high quality technical product specifications Assist in the handover of developed concepts to NPD team. Propose production test methods and draft Product Requirement Specifications (PDS) as directed. Lead the preparation, execution, & documentation of technical design reviews Contribute to the IP and Patent Estate of Avanos through preparation of Patent Disclosures and assisting Intellectual Property (IP) function to secure filing and granting of patents. Drive thought leadership through publications in journals, conference presentations, & patents Open to travel at least 15% of the time Qualifications Required BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline with 20+ years of relevant experience OR MS in Engineering with 15+ years of relevant experience OR PhD in Engineering with 12+ years of relevant experience. Ability to write efficient MATLAB code for complex calculations, data manipulations and algorithm development and expertise in importing, cleaning, and analyzing large datasets using MATLAB functions. Ability to write C / C++ code for device drivers, embedded systems, hardware, and object-orientated programming features Proven expertise in electromechanical systems, sensor, gearheads, and motor design and development Medical device experience with history of leading technology enablement & product innovation Demonstrates advanced levels of technical leadership, technical acumen, & problem solving Experience in all phases of the Product Development Lifecycle, especially early-stage proof-of-concept and technical feasibility. Experience with software prototyping and understanding of electrical hardware. Ability to communicate complex results, risks, & technology pathways in an effective manner Advanced understanding of engineering statistical tools and methods, including but not limited to Design of Experiments (DOE), Monte Carlo analysis, Analysis of variance. Proven ability to solve intricate engineering challenges in a dynamic and rapidly evolving environment Preferred Demonstrated expertise in EM navigation systems theory, sensors, algorithms, and hardware desgin Knowledge of specialized toolboxes like signal processing, control systems and image processing.
