This position performs routine and specialized laboratory tests and related procedures. Performs technical work and problem solving at a high level of complexity. Manages new test development projects. May direct and coordinate a small group of Technologists (generally 10 or fewer) and will in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor, carry out supervisory functions.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs tests and procedures requiring special skills, knowledge and judgment; also performs the functions of lower-classified personnel as needed.

Records and reviews test results for significance to determine if additional testing or an alternative procedure is required and does what is needed.

Performs troubleshooting of instruments, takes and records corrective action.

As needed, directs, and coordinates the activities of staff in the section to ensure that all work is performed according to established procedures and that all standards for quality, service and safety are met.

Coordinates the evaluation of new procedures and analytical systems, modification of existing procedures, update of procedure manuals, evaluation of new products, and other investigative projects.

Participates in the performance evaluation of subordinate personnel as required.

Assists less experienced personnel by providing technical guidance and help in solving problems.

Collaborates with the supervisor on developing and implementing of orientation and training programs for section employees, students, and residents.

Performs administrative functions such as ordering and inventory control as assigned.

Relays test results and/or reports to physicians or others authorized to receive them. Discusses findings with physicians.

Attends mandatory annual training sessions in standard precautions, fire safety, chemical hygiene, and laboratory compliance.

In addition to IU Health, laboratory testing services are provided to hospitals and physicians across the country.

Focused on Heme/Coag/Micro Molecular/Urines and Kit Testing, The Technical Specialist oversees the technical work within specified areas to ensure quality and acceptability of tests results across the regional laboratory sites. Ensures complete accurate laboratory record keeping regarding training, competency, quality control, quality assurance, instrument function checks, maintenance, reagents, validation, and correlation. Writes, reviews, and updates laboratory policies and procedures. Assists with validation and correlations, as needed. + Bachelor's in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological science is required.

+ Requires Qualification as CLIA Technical Consultant (TC) and Technical Supervisor (TS).

+ Minimum 4 years experience in high complexity laboratory testing is required.

+ Minimum 2 years experience in moderate complexity testing is required.

+ Requires appropriate certification by ASCP, AMT, NCA or equivalent certification.

+ Requires travel to locations within region on a regular basis. Travel to other regions, as needed.

is the provider of histocompatibility testing for UMMC kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung and stem cell transplant programs.
As a member of the HLA / Flow Immunology team, the
Clinical Laboratory
Technical Specialist
is responsible for directly assisting in oversight of daily laboratory operations, new test development and implementation, and technologist training. HLA tests include bead based antibody analysis, DNA-based molecular typing (SSOP and NGS), and flow cytometric crossmatching for the evaluation of solid organ and stem cell transplant patients and their prospective donors. The Technical Specialist reviews the accuracy of laboratory test results performed by technologists; creates test reports; maintain supply inventories; act as a technical resource for the local deceased donor organ procurement organization; train staff in testing and related laboratory procedures, and perform supervisory functions as delegated by the laboratory supervisor. The Technical Specialist participates in rotating on-call administrative duties for urgent deceased donor compatibility testing for the solid organ transplant programs.

What You Need to Be Successful:


Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to perform your daily tasks efficiently. The Technical Specialist position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. The successful candidate must be able to work in a highly technical, precise environment. A strong initiative and supervisory skills are highly desired and are a requirement to succeed in the laboratory.
Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor degree in Science, or other related field. A minimum of five years of experience in histocompatibility testing, and an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certification is required.
