A good starting salary for a technician is $23,000 in the United States. That puts you in the 10th percentile of annual income for a technician in the U.S., which is about what you would expect if you were new to the field. The average salary for technicians is $37,303, but that normally requires some level of experience to achieve. Furthermore, a good starting salary for a technician can vary by state.
It takes as little as 6 months to become an IT technician. While many IT technicians have 4-year degrees and some have associate degrees in computer science or networking, a large majority report being "self-taught." Almost half of IT technicians have gotten to be where they are through certifications and online courses.
For example, Google IT Support Professional Certificate usually takes about six months if you're studying 10 hours per week. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate Gain provides you with the skills required to succeed in an entry-level IT job.
There are five mains areas that include technical support fundamentals, computer networking, operating systems, systems administration, and IT infrastructure and security.
On the other hand, getting an associate's degree, which can take up to 18-months, in information technology may open more doors to entry-level positions as an IT technician than through certifications alone.
Conversely, while the cost of a bachelor's degree is higher than that of an associate because of the extra credit hours, you will see a greater return on your investment due to the higher earnings potentially available to IT technicians with 4-year degrees.
For example, the median salary of a mid-level (5 to 9 years experience) IT technician with an associate's degree is only $50,558 a year compared to $72,000 a year for those with a bachelor's degree.
Techs make $44,588 a year, on average. However, there is a lot of variability in how much tech makes depending on the industry or type of tech (e.g., maintenance, IT) and location.
The range in a tech's yearly salary, for instance, can range from $28,000 to $70,000 a year. A more senior-level position as a technician can earn you upwards of $60,000 a year.
Factors such as the type of technician you are and your location will impact your earning potential as a tech. An electronic technician, for instance, averages around $56,000 a year compared to a field technician, which averages around $44,000 a year.
The industry you tech for also plays a big role in earning potential. For example, working for companies like ATT or Aeotrek pays over $50,000 a year. While working tech for the US forest service, you would only average around $39,000 a year. Conversely, tech working for a company like UBreakiFIx earn around $27,3000 a year.
Depending on where the job is located and what industry it will impacts the amount that tech can earn. For example, a mechanic tech working in Wyoming, Illinois, and Nevada should average over $55,000 a year, but in states such as Hawaii, Vermont, and Maine, a tech would average less than $40,000 a year.
Another example, if you're an HVAC ( (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) tech in Alaska, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, you should expect to make over $55,000 a year, but if you work in Tenneniss, Oklahoma, and North Carolina, you should expect to earn less than $45,000 a year.
A good tech salary is $20 an hour ($41,600 a year) or more. Much of what is considered a good tech salary depends on the type of tech they are and the industry that they work in. Beyond that, factors such as the state that you live also play a role.
Tech workings in testing, manufacturing, mechanic, medical, and information should expect to earn over $20 an hour. A good salary for an automotive tech or testing tech, for example, would be around is $24.00 an hour. However, for a cable or field tech, it would be closer to $18.00 an hour.
The location of the job also plays a role. If you live in Hawaii, Connecticut, Alaska, Maryland, and New Jersey (earn $20 or more an hour), you should expect to earn substantially more than the national average of $17.56 an hour or $36,522 per year.
However, if you live in New Mexico, Alamba, Mississippi, Arkansas, Utah, or Idaho (earn $15 or less an hour), you can expect to earn less than the national average a year.
The technicians that get paid most are in technology, with an average of $45,500 a year. The industry and location impact the earning potential of a technician.
The hourly wage of a technician can be as high as $27.16 and as low as $8.65. Currently, most technician wages range between $13.22 (25th percentile) to $19.23 (75th percentile).
The average pay range varies greatly by as much as $6.01 because there are so many different types of technicians and different states pay differently depending on the industry and cost of living in that state.
