About this Position
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is looking for an Instrument Shop Technician for their Research Laboratory. The BAE laboratory is a research support shop whose goal is to provide support to faculty, staff and students on research and development projects in the department and with other groups across the campus. This position also supports mechanical shops on miscellaneous projects that require fabrication and support the mission of the university.
Research support includes but is not limited to: mill/ lathe machine work, welding and sheet fabrication using steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum. Prototype fabrication using wood and plastic, 3D printing, electronic/ pneumatic integration. Prototype projects are often more detail oriented than production work. Candidates must be proficient in the use of metalworking machines and tools to fabricate new machine components and repair defective components.
Performance of other assigned duties related to operations, maintenance, and renovations to buildings and equipment, such as preventative maintenance, light duty carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and other miscellaneous repairs and maintenance activities are also responsibilities of this position, including responding to urgent work.
Safety is paramount and use of appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, safety glasses, etc.) is a must. This position regularly stands, bends, stoops, lifts above the shoulders, and requires the physical ability to lift 50 lbs. frequently and more than 50 lbs. occasionally.
About the Department: Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering is a unique department shared between two colleges, Ferguson College of Agriculture and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. The department enhances the production and profitability of agricultural and biological products, and the conservation and management of natural resources through teaching, research, and outreach. Required Qualifications

At least 5 years of machine shop experience in machining and/or fabricating machine components.

Pay is based solely on the number of calls completed.
Calls start at $35 and go up based on distance traveled
Pay period: Every Friday after the first week worked
Tickets are run Monday-Friday during the day shift. Candidates must be regularly available a minimum of 3 weekdays to be considered.
Call volume is variable but is usually 2-4 calls per day
You will complete certifications from Dell and Lenovo as part of your onboarding. Certifications are online and free to you.
You must have a reliable form of transportation and a valid driver's license to run these calls. You will be visiting multiple work sites throughout your day.
You must have access to a computer and the Internet to log onto your portal each day.
You must be available to log into your tech portal each morning you are working by 9 am to code your calls and map out your route for the day.
The manufacturer has completed troubleshooting and shipped a part prior to your ticket being issued to you.
You will confirm service times with the customer in your tech portal. Services will be completed at the customer site (residential and commercial)
You will pick up parts daily from the assigned Fed Ex or UPS store for your territory before going onsite. Once all calls are completed for the day drop off the old parts with the pre-paid label that is provided.

Duties Include:

Ensure SCI is destroyed by authorized means.

Be able to determine from the drawing/work ticket proper test pressure and choose the correct test gauge.
Recycle water to storage tank after hydro-test and dry vessels.
Perform task within the time allocated in the production schedule and in accordance with Forum US, Inc. Quality requirements.
Tap all screwed connection prior to plugging.
Clean all sealing surfaces of flanges or closures.
Tape and apply never seize to all screw connections.
Get proper gasket for each size and grade of flange.
Tighten all screwed plugs and blind properly.
Install proper fill line and vents on vessel.
Install proper test gauge (per test pressure).
Operate fill and high pressure pumps.
Bring vessel safely up to test pressure testing.
Drain water to storage tank and dry vessel.
Perform the above as well for low pressure air test.
Any other activity required by supervisor.

This position requires working knowledge of piping. Being able to use 24, 36, and 48 inch pipe
Wrenches as well as impact wrenches.

* Maintain working knowledge of regulatory requirements, perform associated required tasks, and complete required documentation (OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.)
* Investigates and analyzes corrosive conditions for existing and/or proposed facilities
* Responsible for corrosion control and associated compliance of cathodically protected pipelines, compressor stations or plant facilities, and other buried, submerged, or above ground facilities
* Proactively conduct pipe-to-soil potential surveys, casing-to-soil readings, rectifier and bond readings, current flows on pipeline, and foreign pipe-to-soil readings and all other structures under cathodic protection on a frequency as stated in SOPs or meet regulatory requirements and document in the corrosion database or other forms, records or reports
* Evaluate protective coating condition including internal, external and atmospheric systems and make repairs as needed, evaluate pipe anomalies and perform remaining strength calculations in accordance with established procedures
* Have an understanding of pipeline internal corrosion mechanisms and related mitigation measures including treatment and testing, collection of samples, bacteria, pH, dissolved H2S, and C02 testing and analysis, and perform chemical requirement calculations
* Perform cathodic protection design including current requirement calculations and soil resistivity testing
* Generate and maintain the reports covering rectifiers, bonds, pipeline isolation and annual corrosion control reports
* Install, maintain and repair rectifiers, anodes systems, cables, bonds, test stations and perform ground bed efficiency calculations
* Evaluate the effects of stray currents from other sources (i.e., traction systems, coal mines, AC transmission lines, etc.) and take the necessary action(s) to mitigate their effect on Energy Transfer facilities
* Read and interpret pipeline maps, as-builts and PLD's
