A technology officer works with all of a company's technological needs. They don't just robotically produce technological products, the technology officer sees tech as one part of a business's vision and thinks of new ways to leverage technological developments to serve its needs. They usually work with a whole team of developers and other tech workers.

The day-to-day tasks of a technology officer differ depending on the business's needs. They may spend their day investigating new technological developments that could give the business a leg up compared to their competitors, working with the development team, or figuring out new ways to use technology internally to make business more efficient.

Technology officers usually have lots of knowledge about business and technology, which seems self-explanatory. Most have bachelor's or even master's degrees in business, engineering, or a related field. If they work hard, a technology officer can work their way up to the position of a chief technology officer.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a technology officer. For example, did you know that they make an average of $43.94 an hour? That's $91,399 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 11% and produce 46,800 job opportunities across the U.S.

What Does a Technology Officer Do

There are certain skills that many technology officers have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed analytical skills, business skills and communication skills.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a technology officer, we found that a lot of resumes listed 10.2% of technology officers included c++, while 8.6% of resumes included emergency, and 7.6% of resumes included infrastructure. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

When it comes to searching for a job, many search for a key term or phrase. Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the technology officer job title. But what industry to start with? Most technology officers actually find jobs in the finance and technology industries.

How To Become a Technology Officer

If you're interested in becoming a technology officer, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 52.1% of technology officers have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 14.7% of technology officers have master's degrees. Even though most technology officers have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a technology officer. When we researched the most common majors for a technology officer, we found that they most commonly earn bachelor's degree degrees or master's degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on technology officer resumes include diploma degrees or associate degree degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a technology officer. In fact, many technology officer jobs require experience in a role such as consultant. Meanwhile, many technology officers also have previous career experience in roles such as research assistant or officer.

Some places are better than others when it comes to starting a career as a technology officer. The best states for people in this position are New York, Virginia, New Jersey, and Washington. Technology officers make the most in New York with an average salary of $137,952. Whereas in Virginia and New Jersey, they would average $116,535 and $112,653, respectively. While technology officers would only make an average of $111,528 in Washington, you would still make more there than in the rest of the country. We determined these as the best states based on job availability and pay. By finding the median salary, cost of living, and using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Location Quotient, we narrowed down our list of states to these four.
