The Field Network Technician is responsible for testing, validating, and maintaining the physical network infrastructure; including construction testing and activation, repairing OSP systems deployed throughout the network, and replacement of assets as required. This role covers construction activation oversight, demand maintenance (outage response) and preventative maintenance (routine upkeep). Field Network Technicians will work closely with Construction, Network Engineering and Operations teams, serving as the field counterpart to these teams. In addition to conducting user acceptance testing and overseeing the activation of new fiber installations after contractor work is completed, the Outside Plant Technician may be required to initiate splicing.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Install and configure a range of network devices and services, including routers, switches, firewalls, and Passive Optical Network (PON) access equipment.
Perform network maintenance, system upgrades, and augmentations to enhance existing network installations.
Follow Method of Procedure (MOP) documents to ensure consistent and accurate execution of tasks.
Adhere to configuration and change management policies to ensure proper approval and awareness when making changes to network infrastructure.
Collaborate with Network Engineering and Operations teams to effectively address network outages, providing clear timelines and progress updates.
Participate in an on-call rotation and provide after-hours field support during network maintenance and service interruptions.
Maintain and update network documentation.
Assist in the deployment and maintenance of additional network cabinet/node sites.
Perform regular audits and inspections of newly completed network construction.
Contribute to the development and improvement of policies regarding safety, processes, procedures, best practices, codes, and regulations for i3 Broadband Splicing and Field staff.
Replace and repair vaults and conduits as needed.
Pull fiber to restore network service during outages.
Engage in continuous training on procedures, products, and services to stay current with industry standards.
Operate a variety of heavy equipment, hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and computers.
Work closely with high voltage DC power systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
