Job Description: Maintain efficient operations of admixture area including safe preparation of medications and inventory management. Coordinate drug management and fulfillment support of multi-disciplinary clinic operations departments. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Accurately retrieve medications required to fulfill medication orders Demonstrate professional competency in reviewing orders for appropriateness and accuracy Demonstrate proficiency in performing mathematical calculations required for determining drug dilution and final concentrations Aseptically prepare drug solutions and products Maintain admixture area in accordance with clean room guidelines Interprets the appropriateness of a medication order before preparing the medication. Evaluate critical patient information prior to beginning admixture according to policy and procedure. Maintain knowledge of all policies and procedures related to cleaning procedures and schedules Accurately perform inventory management and cleaning procedures Maintain inventory levels and logs as per protocols Receive inventory and oversee dispensing of all drugs Collaborate with the extended healthcare team in clinic regarding patient care activities Maintain all relevant clinical logs (i.e., cleaning, controlled substance, respirator, etc.) Serve as a drug information resource to clinical staff Effectively retrieve and utilize chemotherapy spill kits Follows all safety standards for handling chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs. Conducting library preparation and quality control, setting up NGS DNA sequencer (e.g., MiSeq) and associated equipment operation, developing molecular biology method and interacting with project scientists for troubleshooting and implementing process improvements. Develop and execute complex molecular biology protocols, specifically various NGS-based library preparation protocols. Serve as the in-house NGS expert; collaborate with bioinformaticians, internal CDC groups (i.e., Office of Advanced Molecular Detection). Stay up to date with technological advancements in Next-Generation Sequencing and genomic/metagenomic applications Write standard operating procedures. Inventory management; maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, reagents, etc. Contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals. Assist in the training of others such as, federal employees, contracting staff, fellows, as well as, external partners, such as visiting scientist and students. SCOPE OF WORK The Microbiologist II will provide scientific and laboratory support to the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) in its preparedness and response to foodborne and diarrheal diseases in the United States and abroad. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs laboratory testing of metagenomics and bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics samples to characterize enteric bacteria. Supports data analysis of metagenomics samples. Assists the development and/or validation of molecular approaches, including but not limited to analytical comparisons of next generation sequencing platforms and reagents/chemistries. Assists in crafting new standard operating procedures, technical documents (e.g., analysis aids and troubleshooting guidance) and training materials. Prepares and delivers clear, concise, and accurate reports and presentations for colleagues and collaborators at internal and external meetings. Effectively communicates and coordinates with others regarding work tasks and plans to accomplish unit, team, and branch objectives. Shares work progress and problems encountered with others in a timely manner. Demonstrates an understanding of program goals and objectives through formal communication and collaboration with partner organizations and stakeholders. Supports the development of bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of large targeted sequencing data sets for the PulseNet surveillance system. Supports the analysis of large targeted amplicon sequencing data sets used in the validation of laboratory and bioinformatic workflows. Supports the creation and revision of SOPs and validation plans for laboratory and bioinformatic workflows. Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Master's degree, from an accredited academic institution, in a scientific discipline related to the responsibilities of the position. 2-4 years of experience in the genetic and/or bioinformatic analysis of bacterial genetic markers. Required: Previous experience in a similar role. Knowledge of laboratory and safety regulations including CLIA, ISO, and/or OSHA standards. Experience in aseptic techniques and laboratory analysis of samples Experience working with a number of biological organisms and awareness of their handling and storage. Experience working with and adapting/modifying SOPs. Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the preparation of memos and reports. Experience with development and management of a complex relational database. Experience working with statistical software such as SAS, R, Stata, or similar software. Experience working with a number of biological organisms and awareness of their handling and storage. Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Immunizations may be required. Desirable: Specific detailed knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements, handling of clinical specimens, and aseptic techniques. Experience working with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and molecular techniques associated with NGS. Experience scripting in at least one language (Python, R, or shell preferred). Basic statistics training. Check out these videos from our lab employees talking about working at IDEXX: ****************************** In This Role: You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment. You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day. You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas: Hematology: Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques. Chemistry / Endocrinology: Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation. Urinalysis: Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques. Immunology / Serology: Testing blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG). What You'll Need to Succeed: You possess a High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a Science-related field is preferred. It is not required to work in our lab, but if you were a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT), this experience and education would be a plus. Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers). You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues You are looking forward to working in a team You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
