: Power to Change

Tennessee Valley Association, or TVA, provides power to millions of people across seven different southeastern states. They supply businesses mostly, and some of those businesses are energy providers themselves. They do this using hydroelectric and nuclear power and are always looking for the most sustainable methods.

The company has been around since 1933. Since then, they have powered through some of the region's biggest disasters, such as extreme storms, tornados, and floods.

TVA is an important fixture in the communities it serves. It serves to provide people with some of the basic necessities of life. Because of TVA's revolutionary methods, they forged a place as one of the area's top providers of efficient energy.

Tennessee Valley Values

Energy, Environment, Economic Development

TVA was created to better the way of life for people in the region it serves. Before TVA, there were thousands of people that lived without electricity, running water or other services. The types of services that we take for granted today. To this day, TVA still works to provide comfort and stability to people.

The company is very invested in its communities. It gives back in several ways. It donates thousands, if not millions, of dollars to schools and charities every year. It sponsors scholarships to send underprivileged students to college. It gives grants to teachers in need of classroom supplies. All of these things fall in line with their goal for economic development as well. TVA plants seeds all over the region that will sprout successfully people

They have also paired with companies such as Volkswagen and The Conservation Fund to provide grants to environmental improvement projects.

TVA is also very conscious of its long history. The company has a Heritage Series where they revisit their past in order to move forward with a better future.

A Company Powered by People You Know

You're Never Too Far From a Friend at TVA

The great thing about TVA employees is that they are first and foremost community members. TVA locations, for the most part, are in smaller sized towns. This means that they will get to know each other very well. Working at TVA is like working with your neighbor. A neighbor who you really like.

Because TVA people are such big parts of their communities, they never hesitate to get out there and volunteer. Employees like to get involved with food drives such as The Second Harvest Food Drive.

The company is made of a highly skilled workforce. The majority of their current employees graduated from schools in areas in which TVA operates. TVA loves to keep it local to build stronger communities.

A Culture of Caring for People and the Planet

Creating a Better World, One Flick of the Lightswitch at a Time

You can expect an open, honest and inclusive working environment with TVA. They stress Diversity and Inclusiveness and have initiatives to ensure both are met. The company pulls strengths from its diversity. TVA also enjoys telling the success stories of those who have overcome adversity to find success with their company.

TVA operates in beautiful parts of the country. They advocate for these areas and love for their employees to enjoy them as much as they do. They offer area fishing guides and guides to local areas to explore. Having resources like that can help create closer workforces that all have the same goals.

Something else that has helped make TVA a fantastic place to work is its fantastic intern program. TVA brings in hundreds of interns every year and puts them on real projects. This allows them to grow and if they choose to pursue a career after college with TVA, they are already familiar with the TVA way of life.

TVA Around the South

Locations Around One of the most Diverse American Landscapes: the South

TVA has 6 Tennessee offices and 1 office in Alabama. The company is headquartered in Knoxville, TN. All of these offices are located in regions of the country that are rich in natural resources. The headquarters and surrounding Tennessee offices are all within close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is one of the most popular parks in America.

Office environments might vary from position to position. Some positions are field-based, some are going to be in a factory sort of environment and some will be more of a typical office environment. But that's part of working for a company as diverse in scope as TVA!

The Benefit of Powering a Region

Sleep Well, Knowing You've Done Good

TVA employees get to see the work they do first hand. They provide comfortable and luxurious ways of life for people. Employees get to rest assured at night that they are making that shared television time or hot dinner possible for a family. They get to know that without the work that they do, a hot shower at the end of the day might not be possible for some.

The company also offers:

  • Paid training
  • Free snacks at all the offices
  • Parking reimbursement
  • Gym memberships to keep you operating at peak physical fitness.
  • Interviewing with TVA

Interviewing with the company is fairly standard. Past and current employees said that the interviewers were very direct and honest with them, which they really liked. They also said that the process took anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.

    The Jobs at Company

Most opportunities with TVA are skilled positions, but there is a wide range of positions that the company hires for. If they think you are the right fit for their company, then they will be happy to train you. Some common positions are:

  • Systems Engineer : This is a skill position that requires an engineering degree. With all engineer positions, there is a strong likelihood that some supervision responsibility could fall on you. A lot of engineering positions are on-call positions as well. This is a demanding position, but you wouldn't be an engineer if you liked it any other way would you?
  • Program Manager: Do you love puzzles? Or maybe you love throwing parties... successfully. This could be a fit for you. At TVA, a program manager role is sort of an all-around coordinator role. It is making sure that all of the pieces are accounted for and taken care of. Sort of like a real-life puzzle. It will also require you to become versed in all aspects of the programs you are working on. So I hope you like to learn!
  • Assistant Unit Operator: This role is for a technically minded person. It's for a person that can read a manual and know exactly how to perform the operation, never deviating from the script. This is for someone who is familiar and comfortable with different procedures.
  • Being such a large company that provides so many services, there is always ample opportunity for any number of types of positions with TVA.

Management picking favorites and giving them special treatment. Employees that are not favorites are treated extremely poorly. Having to deal with sexual harassment by superiors due to facing retaliation/termination, not being believed, the ones reported will find out and will retaliate against you, you being viewed as the bad guy, while the ones reported are the victims.
