In 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law, authorizing the formation of federally chartered credit unions in all states.
The credit union officially began on June 5, 1936 when 57 TVA employees pooled their resources of $500 to charter the organization under the Farm Credit Administration.
In 1938 the Board hired its first employee, Nan Corbett.
The credit union’s first official office was located in the Pound Building in 1938 and moved into the James Building later that year.
In 1953 the office re-located to the Old Post Office building and in 1953 moved to the Edney Building.
R.O. Swisher was hired in 1954 as the credit union’s first full-time office manager.
In 1966 it moved to offices in the lobby of the Patten Hotel.
In 1970, the Bureau became an independent federal agency when the National Credit Union Administration was formed to charter and supervise federal credit unions, and the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) was also formed to insure credit union deposits.
Moves administrative office to 715 Market Street Opens Iuka, Miss., Branch (Branch closes in 1982)
The credit union’s membership consisted solely of these TVA employees and their family members until 1983 when it began adding Select Employee Groups (SEGs) outside of TVA.
Opens Fourth In-Store Branch With Opening of Etowah Food City Builds a new state-of-the-art, free standing branch in Dayton, TN. Replacing the 1986 building and location.
Opens TVA Chattanooga Office Complex with two locations in Missionary Ridge Place and Signal Place Buildings (Signal Place Branch closes in 1995)
Opens Watts Bar Branch with merger of TVA Watts Bar Credit Union (Branch closes in 1999)
Opens Sequoyah Branch (Branch closes in 2008)
In 2022, TVFCU received approval to serve four additional counties in North Georgia- Chattoga, Gourdon, Murray, and Whitfield, expanding our community to 17 counties in Southeast Tennessee and Nort Georgia.
