Texas Lutheran University company history timeline

1891

Founded in 1891, TLU is located in Seguin.

The university traces its roots back to 1891, to an academy of the first German Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Texas, in Brenham.

1912

That school accumulated crushing financial problems, but in 1912, it was rescued by an offer of 15 acres and $20,000 from local businessmen to relocate the academy to Seguin.

1926

In 1926, TLU’s first junior college coach, John M. (Jack) Doerfler said he wanted our athletes to be strong and tenacious, and so he named them Bulldogs.

1929

The Swedish Lutheran Trinity College of Round Rock was having trouble maintaining a minimum 40 freshmen and 20 sophomores, so in 1929, it pooled its resources with the larger Seguin institution, bringing two professors and support from Swedish Lutherans.

1930

The combined school was renamed Texas Lutheran College in 1930.

1940

Started in 1940, Vespers is an annual Christmas celebration of music and word performed by the TLU Choir, TLU Women's Choir, Kantorei Chamber Choir and the Symphonic Winds and Percussion.

1949

Streng, Evelyn Fiedler 1949.

1954

Dedicated in 1954, the Chapel of the Abiding Presence is a TLU icon.

1958

Written in 1958 by Marlene Kriewald Bonds '57

1996

After 40 years of growth, the institution was once again renamed, taking its present title of Texas Lutheran University in 1996.

2001

On April 5, 2001 the home was literally rolled 400 feet to its current location and restoration began.

2008

Started in 2008 by the Student Government Association to promote school spirit at athletic events, the idea is to fill the stands with a sea of gold.

Since 2008, Day of The Dogs and Hot Dogs have been annual service projects in the fall and spring.

2019

After passing away in 2019, Louie's owner introduced campus to Talulah, our new unofficial Bulldog mascot.
