1915

AR Accessories was formed as Amity Leather Products Company in 1915, by Robert H. Rolfs.

1916

Rolfs incorporated the Amity Leather Products Company in February of 1916, with initial capital stock of $25,000.

1917

Rolfs moved the operation in 1917 to another West Bend location, the third floor of the Hangartner Building.

1924

In 1924 Amity built and moved into an entirely new building of its own, on South Main St in West Bend, outfitted with state-of-the-art leather goods manufacturing equipment.

1930

Another expansion of company headquarters took place in 1930.

1932

In 1932 the company introduced a new line of high quality billfolds named for its founder.

1937

In 1937 Amity introduced a product that changed the wallet industry forever.

1940

Amity added another new product, the travel kit, to its line in 1940.

1946

By 1946 the company was ready to expand yet again.

1959

In 1959 the company built a new administrative office building in West Bend, adjacent to its South Main St manufacturing and office compound.

1965

Robert Rolfs died in 1965, exactly half a century after launching his company.

1968

1968: Mel Marks starts Motorcar Parts & Accessories, Inc. (MPA) to distribute imported auto parts.

1975

Giorgio Armani history, profile and history video Giorgio Armani founded his eponymous Italian fashion house in 1975.

1976

In 1976 the company established an international division to market its products outside of the United States.

1979

In 1979, Marks was joined by his son, Richard Marks, who gained experience in the business by owning and operating his own import automotive parts store.

1980

Growth remained steady, and in 1980 the company again found it necessary to enlarge its West Bend administrative building.

1986

1986: MPA enters remanufacturing business.

As those vehicles began to age they would need replacement alternators and starters, anywhere from four to eight years after purchase. It was not until 1986 that the company became involved in remanufacturing starters and alternators for foreign cars, aimed at the do-it-yourself customer.

1987

Domestic Remanufacturing Beginning in 1987

Although the company's Asian affiliates enjoyed much lower labor costs, MPA also began remanufacturing in the United States in 1987, establishing a plant in Torrance, California.

1988

In 1988 Amity produced a series of full-page color magazine ads that focused heavily on craftsmanship, using the tagline "Good Things Last." The following year Amity switched gears in its advertising and, instead, began to point more toward their products' prestige and fashion values.

1990

In 1990 the company finished work on a design center--an extension of its West Bend complex--that housed not only Amity's design staff but an employee fitness center as well.

1992

The company's spark plug wire set business, launched in 1992, was a much less intricate process, involving components manufactured to MPA specifications by third parties.

For fiscal 1992, the company generated $13.7 million in sales and $500,000 in earnings.

1993

In 1993 the company came out with its "Macro Bag," a sort of mini-purse small enough to wear under a coat, yet big enough to carry a checkbook, glasses, and other essential handbag items.

The company ended up selling about 400,000 Macro Bags by the end of 1993, at $25 to $45 a pop.

In fiscal 1993, MPA reported $17.5 million in sales, a significant improvement over the previous year, as well as a $600,000 profit.

1993: The company's main offices moved from New York to California.

1994

In 1994 the company purchased the Connecticut-based New England Accessories, acquiring in the process the license to make the Duck Head Apparel line of personal leather goods.

For fiscal 1994, MPA saw its sales improve to $20.6 million and net earnings top $1 million for the first time.

He was replaced by Selwyn Joffe, who had been a director of the company since 1994 and had considerable executive experience at Wolfgang Puck Food Company as well as NetLock Technologies and Palace Entertainment.

1995

To better serve its East Coast and southern markets, in May 1995 the company also established a 31,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1995 Rozek was promoted to the new position of vice-chairman.

Prospects appeared even brighter in fiscal 1995: MPA's plan to concentrate its sales efforts on major autopart retailers paid off when the AutoZone and Pep Boys chains signed on.

1996

In August of 1996 the company announced that it had adopted a new corporate name, AR Accessories Group, Inc., marking the first name change in its history.

The year 1996 was one of transition for Amity under Slowik.

The company's success in appealing to major retailers was reflected in the fact that more than 70 percent of MPA sales in fiscal 1996 were to the automotive chains, with the rest mostly attributed to the large warehouse distributors such as Parts, Inc. and Hahn Automotive.

1997

To fund necessary factory upgrades, MPA made a secondary offering of stock in 1997.

Leveraging its reputation as a market leader for imports, the company successfully launched a domestic program for remanufactured alternators and starters in fiscal 1997.

1998

In 1998, the company opened a second Torrance manufacturing plant, as well as signed a lease on a larger facility in Nashville, which not only provided distribution and warehousing functions but also the manufacture of spark plug wire sets.

1999

That trend would continue through much of fiscal 1999, but by the time the company prepared to report year-end results, questions by senior management and the board were raised about accounting procedures.

2000

In addition, MPA became the subject of an SEC investigation in early 2000.

2001

While that lingered, the class-action suit was settled in September 2001, with the plaintiffs receiving $7.5 million.

Also in 2001, the founder of the company relinquished his position as chairman, although he stayed on as a director.

2002

Morana, which was born offering jewelry with bijoux aspect to consumers, emerges in the 21st century, in 2002, already within this retail trend, contributing to a democratic consumption of parts whatever the occasion, but mainly for the benefit of its welfare.
