The Action Group company history timeline

1978

When the 12-year ban on political activity was lifted in 1978 in preparation for a return to civilian rule, Awolowo emerged as the leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria.

1983

Following a military coup at the end of 1983, parties were once again banned, and Awolowo retired from politics.

1985

By 1985, now called The North Edinburgh Action Group, membership had grown and service users came from all over Edinburgh, East Lothian, West Lothian and Midlothian.

1992

Treatment Action Group had its origins in the AIDS activist organization, ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). In January 1992, members of the Treatment and Data Committee of ACT UP left the parent group to create a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating treatment research.

By 1992, with development plans focussing across an even wider area, a further name change to The Action Group was made.

1995

Following approval of several effective antiretroviral drugs in 1995, TAG pressed the government and the pharmaceutical industry to conduct research to understand the long-term effects of the new drugs.

2002

In 2002, TAG began raising awareness of the impact that tuberculosis (TB) was having on people with HIV in the developing world.

2007

In 2007, the organization received a $4.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to foster increased international advocacy on TB/HIV research and treatment.

2015

2015 marked CPAG's 50th anniversary.

2022
