THE ARC OF GREATER company history timeline

1968

1968 The Arc appointed by the legislature to be one of California’s first two regional centers.

1977

1977 Golden Gate Regional Center established as a separate non-profit agency.

1982

1982 Launched Supported Employment Services in partnership with University of San Francisco.

1985

1985 Addition of Senior Services for older adults with developmental disabilities.

1993

1993 Created Endowment Fund

1998

In 1998, after 37 years of providing only advocacy services, The Arc was approached by a small group of families concerned their only option upon completion of their educational programs was to place their sons and daughters in sheltered workshops.

2001

2001 Purchase of our main facility at 1500 Howard Street, San Francisco, finalized.

2003

2003 Piloted Optimal Wellness Program to provide medical advocacy, health and nutrition services for older adults with developmental disabilities.

2008

2008 The Arc’s Household Goods Recycling Services moves operations to main office at 1500 Howard Street.

2013

2013 The Arc San Francisco expands its lifelong learning curriculum to include new Adult Life, Internship and Career Development & Advancement programs.

2015

2015 The Arc San Francisco and Mercy Housing mark housing milestone with construction of affordable housing units at two San Francisco properties with universal, accessible design for residents with developmental disabilities.

2017

2017 Launch of our 3-Year Strategic Plan, "Future Forward," a roadmap for Client Success, Operational Excellence, and Trust and Transparency.

2019

In 2019, The Arc of Greater Plymouth expanded its role as an affiliate of The Arc to include Upper Cape Cod through Hyannis, by agreement with The Arc of Massachusetts.
