Choices for People provides year-round support and instructional programs designed to aid individuals with disabilities in developing essential life skills. These skills promote inclusion, independence, self-sufficiency, and productivity; and aim to maximize the individual's quality of life in the least restrictive environment possible.
Choices for People assists in individual goal-oriented program planning, and acts as an advocate in the community through the removal of attitudinal, architectural, environmental, financial, employment-related, communicational, transportation, and other barriers.
Position Summary
Responsible for providing direct services to individuals and coordinating needs for each individual on their caseload. Support and advocate for all individuals served.
Duties and Responsibilities (not all inclusive):
Establish a secure, positive environment that nurtures individuals' needs, self-expression, and goals.
Overseeing individuals and taking care of their needs and performing housekeeping duties.
Delivers individualized services, training, and care for individuals in compliance with healthcare professionals' instructions, their individual plan, and other specific guidelines.
Responsible for maintaining working relationships with employers, industry organizations, and public agencies to source job, volunteer, and social opportunities for clients.
Responsible for evaluating an individual's background, skills, and interests as well as building resumes as needed to prepare individuals for interviewing and entry to the workforce to match potential jobs.
Assist individuals with job searches via the Internet or business contacts to identify potential job openings, assist with the application process, and follow-up communication.
Advance individuals' decision-making, productivity, and participation in a range of activities.
Promote independence in daily activities, such as work, learning, and leisure.
Facilitate individuals' inclusion in the community's experiences and activities.
Maintain a clean, tidy, and safe environment.
Assists with daily living errands as necessary.
Maintain knowledge of individuals' requirements.
Ensure knowledge base remains current with regulations and best practice trends for service delivery.
Communicate with all stakeholders on a routine basis to share program changes, stay abreast of concerns and evaluate service delivery
Maintain current, accurate, timely records for division.
Actively participate in compliance reviews and audits to include tax functions if applicable.
Uphold all policies and standards, ensuring legislative regulations are followed
Operate facility's vehicles transporting individuals in compliance with policies and governmental statutes.
Requirements
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
At minimum, 18 years of age.
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

QUALIFICATIONS: Position must have a High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.
Meet driver-approved standards as described in the Vehicle Usage Policy. A valid driver's license and good driving record, as well as proof of current auto insurance is required. It is required to have dependable transportation with functioning heat and air conditioning systems and functioning seat belts for safety for transporting individuals served.
Prefer one (1) year experience working with individuals with disabilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Heavy lifting (over 50 lbs.) on a repeated basis required for care of individuals for performing job functions such as transferring. Also required to operate equipment requiring full hand dexterity, traverse unsteady terrain, ascend/descend stairs, bend, twist, stoop and kneel to perform the essential functions of the DSP position. Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.
As a routine part of this position it may be necessary to work in other departments, work additional hours and may also be required to adjust schedules to meet the documented staffing needs of the individual(s) served. May be required to perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor to accomplish Agency goals and meet the needs of the individual(s) served.

The Direct Support Professional will be required to successfully complete an initial orientation. This will include Red Cross CPR, First Aid, Positive Behavior Interventions in-service, Universal Precautions in-service, lifting in-service, a medication administration course, and other lectures on basic information regarding State and Federal law relevant to the organization's policies, procedures, rules and regulations. You will be required to update these in-services annually or as notified. Employees are expected to be reliable when reporting to work for scheduled shifts. All Direct Support Professionals who have committed felonies that are listed on the disqualification registry with the Department of Mental Health will be removed from payroll effective immediately unless a request for exception has been approved with the Department of Mental Health.
A valid Missouri Chauffeur's license within the first two (2) weeks of employment is necessary for this position. Must maintain an acceptable driving status according to Procedure No. 1-8-3, Woodhaven Vehicle Use. Any exception to this requirement must be authorized by the Director of Human Resources or the Director of Programs. Applicant must maintain a positive relationship with the individuals they support.
Some homes require lifting a minimum of 50 pounds. See Human Resources or your immediate supervisor for specific homes where lifting is a requirement.
