The Arc of Volusia company history timeline

1962

Our agency was officially recognized by the State of Florida and chartered as a non-profit organization on March 23, 1962.

1968

Ray Dahlberg joined the staff in 1968 as our first Executive Director.

1971

On June 1, 1971, Jack D. Dunkle was hired as our 2nd Executive Director.

1973

In 1973, The Arc of Volusia coordinated the first Special Olympics event in Volusia County – with 200 athletes participating.

1978

After a brief interim, Eugene Gabriel took over the reins in 1978, and continued to serve as our Executive Director for the next 20 years.

1994

Founded in 1994 and located in historic DeLand, AAMA is a unique and vital resource in this part of Florida.

2000

Now the home of DeLeon Springs State Park and the Sugar Mill pancake house, this site was once the home of the 2000 acre Spring Garden Plantation, which grew cotton, sugarcane and corn, and had more than 230 enslaved people.

2010

Snell continued her education and received her Bachelors of Science degree from Bethune Cookman-College and studied toward a Masters degree at Florida A&M University as well as Stetson University.” In 2010, she had one child who was still living, Yvonne C. Watson.

2017

2021

On September 25, 2021, Volusia Remembers members gathered at the site where Lee Bailey was found, 130 years before.
