The Arc Prince George's County history

Goddard Center takes flight: In 1959, the Goddard Space Flight Center was established as NASA’s first space flight center.

First in emergency service: Prince George’s County became the first jurisdiction in Maryland to implement the “911” Emergency Reporting System in 1973.

The Washington Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) won their only championship in 1978.

Five hundred Arc members from around the state converge on the Statehouse to demand expansion of community services, setting the stage for program improvements in the 1980’s.

Most challenging mission: Prince George’s County was the base for one of the most challenging missions ever conducted by NASA. In December 1993, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center managed the highly successful first servicing mission of the Hubble Space Telescope.

In 1994, Great Oaks was the first state institution to close.

The Arc develops a Strategic Plan for the Year 2000.

Resource Connections, Inc., as this new case management agency was named, was officially funded to operate as of July 1, 2003.

Plantation site joins the underground: In 2005, Oxon Cove Park was accepted as a member of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom for the discovery of the Jacob Shaw story.

Prince George’s honors those lost on 9/11: The 9/11 Memorial Park, dedicated on September 11, 2006 and located at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, has a brick sidewalk lined with 25 white Crepe Myrtle trees for each of the residents who died in the attacks.

In 2015, the Provider Council, now comprised of 24 member agencies, embarked on its First Annual Employment Awards Breakfast which was held on October 9, 2015, as part of National Disabilities Employment Awareness month.

June of 2016 saw an increased demand for services, and many providers found it difficult to expand sufficiently to the need.
