The Big Texan Steak Ranch company history timeline

1960

November 1960-The Big Texan host a 1 hour Steak Challenge; featuring 12 eaters competing for $60 and bragging rights.

R.J. "Bob" Lee opened the Big Texan in 1960.

1962

One day in 1962 a cowboy came in so hungry that he said he could "eat a whole cow." Bob decided to see if that was true.

1964

June 1964-The Big Texan business and notoriety continues to grow.

1969

September 1969- With the help of his wife Mary Ann and sons Bobby and Danny he begs/borrows and uses his last dollar to move and rebuild his Big Texan on the newly purchased land.

1971

April 1971- The new facility included the nostalgic Route 66 charm, early Panhandle memorabilia items, strolling musicians, gift shop, old west saloon and the famed 72oz challenge.

1976

Fire gutted the west wing of the restaurant in 1976 and destroyed $100,000 in antiques.

1977

The restaurant reopened as a larger facility in 1977.

1978

January 1978-RJ Lee rebuilt his new Big Texan in a fashion that can only be described as a Texas masterpiece.

1983

November 1983-RJ Lee opens Big Texan Motel across parking lot from steakhouse.

1990

February 1990-The Big Texan founder R.J. Lee passes away, his sons Bobby and Danny take over operations.

1993

January 1993-The Big Texan expands its entertainment offerings with the debut of the Big Texan Opry, strolling musicians and dinner-shows.

2010

2010-The Lee Brothers and brewmaster Tom Money began brewing and serving craft beer onsite.

2014

Their number includes the oldest person ever to win, a 69-year-old grandmother, and the record-smashing Molly Schuyler, who in 2014 ate her entire meal in a mind-boggling five minutes -- and then ate a second 72-ounce meat slab in only five minutes more.
