The Group Leader is responsible for the direct guidance, supervision, and safety of youth under their care, while ensuring an engaging and intellectually stimulating member experience. He/ she will build rapport with members through positive interactions in program activities. The Group Leader will also assist in managing program assistants and volunteers. Job Requirements Frontline employees are not required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, however, BCNY strongly encourages all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and obtain a booster shot. Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of a group of 10-21 boys ages 7- 11 years old. The Position The SONYC Group Leader will report to the SONYC Program Director and work closely with SONYC staff (including group leaders, school teachers and other staff) to support the SONYC after school program at a middle school in the Bronx serving 120 students. Primary responsibilities include working with a set group of 15 students to support them during various activities, including leading multiple hour-long sessions in a sequential curriculum that engage students, submitting written lesson plans, supporting program goals around attendance and engagement, and fostering a positive, productive environment for program participants. It is important that Group Leaders be able to act as a positive role model and mentor to the young people they work with, and to develop a positive, supportive culture and an effective way of dealing with challenges with students that may arise. Qualifications Previous after school experience, ideally with middle school aged youth Associate's Degree at minimum, or currently working toward Associate's or Bachelor's Degree Ability to collaborate effectively with other after school staff Must be able to develop hour long lessons and produce lesson plans Excellent written and spoken communication skills (Bilingual ability in Spanish is a plus) Commitment to fostering a student-centered, safe, respectful, and productive environment for all participants, families and school partners All staff must pass DOE fingerprinting clearance, and other related clearances, including proof of COVID-19 vaccination before beginning work. In addition, as a Meals on Wheels pioneer since 1964, Isaacs Center is responsible for the preparation and delivery of more than 1,000 meals per day to the isolated and homebound through the operation of a food and nutrition program that includes a community kitchen, food pantry, and a delivery service (by foot and truck) Purpose of Position: The primary function of the Group Leader is to plan group activities that provide a safe and engaging learning environment to the participants of the Stanley M. Isaacs Beacon program The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services including project based learning that integrate education enrichment, visual arts, clubs, trips, and sports. Schedule: Mon, Tues, Weds & Fri 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Thurs 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Hourly Rate: $17.00 Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties Foster a learning environment that stimulates children's creative growth and development that is clean and safe. Demonstrate professionalism & leadership. Take daily attendance Maintain sound supervision and ensuring the safety of program participants at all times. Deliver educational programs collaborating with DOE teachers. Deliver recreational and cultural programs to develop community and explore the summer theme through art, games, and a performance project. Supervise youth and participate in all activities by building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and the organization's mission, philosophy, and goals. Work with children on developmental and emotional issues; encourage program participation and social skills development. Display or provide opportunity to exhibit children's work. Teach and supervise organized games and assist the activity specialist, escort groups to and from activity areas and field trips. Enforce program rules, identify & respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems. Must have a sense of humor and a passion for youth development. Must be able to pass background check including a Fingerprint Screen, Sex Offender Registry and be physically able to work with children (via a doctor's signed consent including TB screening).
