Pros of working at The Bridge for Youth

I loved the youth. The coworkers with me on the direct care level were by and large fantastic, Im still incredibly close with many of them.

Cons of working at The Bridge for Youth

Management is deeply deeply corrupt. They are not at all transparent about what’s going on, and had a tendency to blame management issues on employees. They were vindictive when confronted with concerns about how things were being run. They would take advantage of people’s care and passion and values to work them so far beyond what’s reasonable. I genuinely didn’t see any friends or family for 3 months at one point because I was so exhausted that every day off was just used to try and recover. I know of three people who had their health conditions substantially worsen because of the amount of stress they were under. I am not being remotely facetious when I say that management is effectively entirely white saviors and rape apologists.

The Bridge for Youth benefits

I really loved the work I was doing. So much. If it weren’t for management I could have worked there my whole life.

What do you like best about The Bridge for Youth's CEO and the leadership team?

I genuinely can’t think of anything. I’m not trying to be negative, I just really truly can’t. There used to be good people on leadership, however they mostly left due to a mix of the poor working conditions/the ethical issues with how management treated youth.

How did you prepare for the The Bridge for Youth interview?

They sent the questions in advance which was great!

How would you improve The Bridge for Youth's culture?

Internally promote long standing staff who know how to do the work and know how things need to be run. The paradox of tolerance- if we’re going to be a safe place for sexually exploited youth then we can’t permit kids who consistently sexually harass others to stay. If we’re going to be welcoming to queer folks we can’t just brush it off when youth are making transphobic comments.

How does your compensation at The Bridge for Youth compare to the industry average?

It’s decent, but it’s not as much as it should be. You realistically should be making hazard pay.

What's the diversity at The Bridge for Youth like?

They do prioritize hiring people with similar lives experiences as the youth we serve, which is fantastic! Pretty diverse!

What brings you the most joy at The Bridge for Youth?

My coworkers and the kids. They’re so resilient and funny and just really interesting and cool.
