The Brooklyn Hospital Center company history timeline

1845

Since 1845, The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) has provided outstanding health services, education and research to our Brooklyn community.

Six years later, in 1845, Brooklyn City Hospital (later renamed The Brooklyn Hospital) was incorporated by the state legislature.

1869

After the Civil War, in 1869, the Orthopedic Infirmary was opened in the building that had originally housed Pathological Hall.

1880

A training school for nurses was established in 1880, thanks to the civic-minded women of the Fruit and Flower Mission.

1890

An ambulance service was established in 1890 to cover a district that included downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene, the Navy Yard and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

1893

By 1893, another building was erected to house one of the first separate maternity departments to be found in a general hospital.

1926

In 1926, the hospital's electrocardiograph was installed — the second in Brooklyn — and a Department of Electrocardiography was established.

1951

The lay Advisory Board, comprising outstanding members of the community, devoted to the activities and welfare of the hospital, was established in May 1951.

2014

2014, TBHC became a Clinical Affiliate of The Mount Sinai Hospital and an Academic Affiliate of The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

2017

2017: TBHC partnered with Mount Sinai Heart to bring comprehensive cardiac care to Downtown Brooklyn.

2017: The Outpatient Pharmacy opened for staff, patients and the community.

2017: The robotic surgery program was launched.

2018

2018: The Epic electronic medical record system was launched throughout the hospital's ambulatory care network.

2020

2020: TBHC was a major frontline in the battle against COVID-19.

2020: The Physicians Pavilion opened.

2021

2021: TBHC partnered with New York Cancer & Blood Specialists to create The Brooklyn Cancer Center.

2021: Myrtle Avenue Dialysis opens.
