The Children's Village company history timeline

1851

1851 The New York Juvenile Asylum (which became The Children’s Village) was founded to provide residential care for orphans and “juvenile delinquents” roaming the streets of Manhattan.

1855

1855 The New York Juvenile Asylum was one of three agencies in New York City that sent children to the Midwest to distance them from the dangers of life on the streets.

1856

1856 The Washington Heights campus, purchased for $33,000 was completed and became home to 1,200 boys.

1861

1861 The Washington Heights campus became racially integrated.

1901

1901 Using the increase in the value of the Washington Heights property, the agency bought a 277-acre farm in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The campus could accommodate only 300 children (down from 1,000 in Washington Heights), so some children were transferred to other agencies.

1920

During the 1920’s, Children’s Village also opened the National Training School for Institution Executives and Workers, the first facility of its kind.

1927

1927 The Children’s Village became the first child care agency in the country to establish a psychiatric clinic on its campus.

1949

The first SOS Village was founded in 1949 in Austria by a student of pediatric medicine, Hermann Gmeiner.

1969

SOS Children's Villages Canada was established in 1969.

1970

1970 The first Therapeutic Recreation Internship program in the US began.

1980

In 1980 the founders of SOS Children’s Village BC, Gilles and Lois Bouchard, were troubled by the unstable life of a 15 year old girl who entered their lives.

1983

Doctor Anne C. Fox-Clarkson, an elementary school principal in Coeur d'Alene, ID., and two parents from her school, Carol Rankin and Kathy Curran, founded Children's Village in 1983.

1984

1984 The Work Appreciation for Youth (WAY) program was established to teach work ethics and provide the first long-term aftercare program for troubled youth.

Children's Village, Inc. was incorporated in 1984 in the State of Idaho and is designated as a non-profit 501(c)3 charity by the IRS. The facility is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and the daily operations are managed by a dedicated administrative team.

1986

Hermann Gmeiner dies on 26 April 1986, having established around 230 SOS Children's Villages all over the world.

1990

The Moyer Home opened in 1990 to serve children who are abused, neglected, homeless, or in severe family crisis.

1994

The campus renovation project was completed: twenty cottages were renovated; two new cottages built; the administration building, gutted by fire in 1994, rebuilt; and a new medical center constructed.

1995

In 1995 a group of faithful supporters of Children's Village formed the Children's Village Foundation, Inc.

2009

In 2009, SOS Children’s Villages received the Save the World Award, and in previous years, received numerous honors including the Mother Teresa Gold Medal and the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize.

2010

The building of this SOS Village was completed in August, 2010.

2015

Responding to the continuing need in the community, the Miller Home re-opened in March 2015 as a continuation of the services provided at the Moyer Home.

In 2015, the Children’s Village Board, executives and staff created a 5-year strategic plan to develop a therapeutic program to address the emotional and psychological effects of trauma and to impact the cycle of abuse and neglect at its core, the family system.

2016

2016 Inwood House, a nonprofit that specializes in pregnant and parenting teens and pregnancy prevention, merged with The Children’s Village.
