The City of Fargo company history timeline

1811

Its basin’s great fertility was first realized in 1811 by the Red River Settlement, an agricultural colony founded near Winnipeg.

1871

On October 6, 1871 a post office was established at the site and the town given the name of Centralia.

Fargo's founding dates back to 1871, when the first settlers staked out homestead claims at the point where the Northern Pacific Railroad would cross the Red River.

Originally settled by Scandinavian and European immigrants, Fargo and Moorhead became boomtowns with the arrival of the NP in 1871.

1872

On February 14, 1872 the United States Post Office officially changed the post office name to Fargo.

1873

Fargo, city, seat (1873) of Cass county, southeastern North Dakota, United States It lies on the Red River of the North opposite Moorhead, Minnesota, and is North Dakota’s largest city.

1890

North Dakota State University (established in Fargo as an agricultural college in 1890) is a noted centre of agricultural research.

1892

By 1892, Fargo had grown to a city of more than 8,000 inhabitants; the tents and shanties of earlier days had been replaced by mainly wood-frame buildings.

1893

But on June 7, 1893, disaster struck the growing city.

1997

In the spring of 1997 populations along the middle and lower Red River were threatened by unprecedented flooding.
