The College of Idaho company history timeline
On October 7, 1891, The College of Idaho held its first class for two students inside a Presbyterian church.
William Judson Boone with the support of the Wood River Presbytery. It first opened its doors to students on October 7, 1891.
Founded in 1891, The College of Idaho is the state's first private liberal arts college.
Nineteen students showed up at The College of Idaho for the first classes in 1891.
In 1893, it was incorporated under the laws of the State of Idaho and placed in the hands of a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees.

CECIL D. ANDRUS, born in Oregon in 1931, another former chairman of the C of I’s board of trustees, was the longest-serving governor of Idaho.
Doctor Boone served as president of the college for 45 years until his death in 1936.
Robert Smylie received his college education at the College of Idaho, graduating with an A.B. in 1938.

Robert Smylie was elected Governor in 1954 and served for three consecutive terms.
In 1963 the Idaho legislature passed the Junior College Act, which provided for the establishment of junior college districts.
Twin Falls County voted to form a junior college district in November 1964.
They held their first meeting in January of 1965 and hired Doctor James L. Taylor as the first president the following month.
Andrus returned to Idaho and was elected to a third term as governor in 1986.
In 1991, to celebrate the college's centenary anniversary, the College changed its name to Albertson College of Idaho, in honor of Kathryn and Joe Albertson.
May 22, 2007 Supermajority of Ada and Canyon County voters passed referendum to establish a community college district, enabling the creation of the College of Western Idaho (CWI).
July 30, 2007 First Board of Trustees meeting held.
On October 10, 2007, college president Bob Hoover announced that the name would revert to The College of Idaho, with the mutual agreement of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation, to promote acceptance and gain financial backing from alumni who were unhappy about the original name change.
January 14, 2008 College of Western Idaho (CWI) welcomes its first students; initially offering a wide selection of certificate classes and fast track career training non-credit programs.
July 15, 2008 Trustee’s approve the 2008-09 Schedule of Tuition Fees, establishing the per credit fee at $119.
January 20, 2009 College of Western Idaho (CWI) welcomes 1,208 students to campus for its first semester with academic classes.
July 13, 2009 Doctor Berton L. Glandon begins his tenure as the second president of CWI.
Summer 2009 Boise State University professional-technical programs and Selland College of Applied Technology staff transition to CWI.
Fall 2009 CWI’s Professional Technical Education programs start classes.
May 17, 2010 Nearly 400 students participate in CWI’s first graduation ceremony held on the front lawn of the Nampa Campus Academic Building.
March 2011 J.A. & Kathryn Albertson Foundation provides initial $6 million investment to secure center in Nampa for nine professional-technical programs.
May 12, 2012 Nearly 670 degrees and 1,400 GED and apprentice completers are celebrated at CWI’s third commencement ceremony.
Spring 2013 College of Western Idaho (CWI) expands facilities with the opening of the Nampa Campus Multipurpose Building.
May 4, 2014 Students with CWI’s Business Professionals of America chapter win 13 awards, including four top-three finishes, at national competition.
Fall 2014 Renovation of CWI’s Micron Center for Professional Technical Education receives national recognition for Outstanding Design by American Schools and Universities Magazine.
May 9, 2015 Over 1,100 degree and certificate candidates, along with GED completers, are honored at CWI’s annual spring commencement ceremony.
August 2015 Math095, a new method for teaching college prep math, is introduced at CWI.
April 14, 2016 The first campus art project, Spirit of Collaboration, is unveiled at CWI’s Micron Center for Professional Technical Education.
July 26, 2016 First class of graduates from CWI’s Law Enforcement program are recognized in a ceremony.
The College has also awarded 246 honorary degrees as of May 2017, including J.A. & Kathryn Albertson, Velma Morrison, Cecil Andrus, Phil Batt, J.R. Simplot, Lord Halifax, and Alan Dershowitz.
In 2019, Doctor Fox announced his intention to retire.
Following a national search, Doctor L. Dean Fisher was selected as the college's fifth president, taking office in June 2020.
