The Container Store company history timeline

1978

Prior to the acquisition, The Container Store was the North American distributor for Elfa, which had been its best-selling product since the company's inception in 1978. 'There is a closeness between Elfa and The Container Store, a synergy.

1989

After carefully evaluating locations, the company opened other stores in Texas--it had seven by 1989.

1990

In 1990 The Container Store opened its first out-of-state store in Atlanta, Georgia.

1991

The first store location outside Texas opened in Atlanta, Georgia in April 1991.

1998

By December 1998, the chain had grown to 18 stores in operation.

1999

In August 1999 the company launched its first television advertising campaign in more than a decade. 'Garage' took a humorous look at over-organization.

The Container Store placed first in Fortune magazine's '100 Best Companies to Work for in America' survey in 1999.

In 1999 the company opened its first store in Florida.

In 1999 it had sales of $160 million.

2000

In October 2000, its first New York metropolitan area store opened.

Our philosophies and cultures are aligned,' Tindell explained in HFN. As of 2000 the two companies continued to operate as separate entities.

2007

Following the deal with Leonard Green & Partners, announced in July 2007, the company announced plans to open 29 more stores in the next five years.

In 2007, The Container Store, Inc. was sold to The Container Store Group, Inc.

2008

The first Arkansas location (Little Rock) opened in March 2008, followed by the first Arizona location (Scottsdale) in the summer, and the first Minnesota location (Edina) and second Ohio location (Cincinnati) that fall.

2013

However, according to Forbes, "the Container Store is a far cry from the 300 store potential investors were promised in the IPO." Since 2013, only 30 stores were added, or about 5 per year.

2016

As of May 2016, The Container Store had 80 locations, with plans to open several stores in the following months.

2019

Our first distribution center in Coppell, Texas, is co-located with our corporate headquarters and call center, and our second distribution center in Aberdeen, Maryland, became fully operational in fiscal 2019.

2020

In fiscal 2020, TCS had net sales of $923.1 million, which represented approximately 93% of our total consolidated net sales.

2021

Effective March 1, 2021, Reiff retired from the company, while retaining her position as chairwoman of the board of directors until the annual meeting of shareholders in late summer 2021.
