The Dart Network company history timeline

1971

Dart Group PLC traces its origins to two businesses formed in 1971 by Art Carpenter.

1975

Another produce, flower, and freight shipping business, Express Air Freight (CI), was set up in 1975 with Art Carpenter as director.

1980

Alan shares the challenges that were faced during the ICC days, and he looks back at how the industry changed following deregulation in 1980.

1982

Gary Randall joined Dart as a summer intern in 1982.

1983

Late 1983 Cockrell Hill joins DART. The member cities appoint 25 governing board members.

In 1983 three new companies with the Channel Express name were formed to take over the Express Air activities.

1985

By 1985, the company had three Dart Heralds in its fleet.

1986

Late 1986 DART acquires 9.8 acres of land for the West Plano Transit Center and 10.7 acres for the North Carrollton Transit Center.

1990

Lake Highlands Station, DART's first infill station, also opened December 6. It was the longest single-day opening of electric light rail in the United States since 1990.

1990 Freight forwarder Benair Freight Ltd. is acquired.

1993

The 1993 Fiscal Year (FY) budget mirrors cost-savings efforts and includes no employee merit pay raises.

1995

Despite the change, total passenger boardings (including charter) total 45.5 million in Fiscal Year 1995 -- only slightly lower than the previous year -- and passenger revenue increases by 9 percent to $25.9 million.

1996

1996 Airbus A300 jets are acquired for conversion into freighters.

1997

The DART Board also restructures the March 1997 bus order from NOVA Bus to purchase more total buses and more buses powered by LNG. The new bus plan includes the purchase of 20 trolley buses manufactured by Chance Coach.

1998

The first aircraft was dubbed the "Eurofreighter." By 1998, the company had three of these jets in the fleet.

1999

The LRVs are scheduled to begin service in June 1999.

2000

The project calls for a site to be used as a park and ride transit center with 355 parking spaces beginning in 2000.

2002

Downtown Rowlett Station marks the first expansion of the Blue Line since it reached Garland in November 2002.

2003

March 2003 To give customers more value for their transit pass, the agency introduces DART destination deals.

2004

January 2004 DART marks 20 years of service to north Texas with a month-long customer celebration.

The $3 million facility, scheduled to open in 2004, will feature enclosed, climate-controlled waiting areas, vending machines, restrooms and more than 200 free parking spaces.

2005

February 21, 2005 DART opens the J. B. Jackson, Jr.

Turnover reached £268 million in the fiscal year ended March 2005.

2005 Benair subsidiary and F27 aircraft are sold off; shares migrate to AIM exchange.

2006

June 14, 2006 DART marks the 10th anniversary of the start of light rail service.

2007

DART Rail was up 14.2% over June 2007 and the TRE was up 19.8% over the same period.

December 21, 2007 A new 14-mile HOV lane on US 75 extending north from the "High Five" interchange to Exchange Parkway in Allen is scheduled to opens.

2008

The increase was sparked by record gasoline prices (approaching $4 per gallon) and the expansion of the HOV network that concluded in January 2008.

May 2008 DART had its busiest month ever providing nearly 10.3 million trips in the month of May.

The newly modified vehicles began service on June 23, 2008 with car #151.

2009

July 2009 DART's High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) network grows to 84 miles with the expansion of the I-30 West (Tom Landry Highway) lanes.

September 14, 2009 The first three miles and four new stations of the Green Line opened with service from MLK, Jr.

2010

The balance of the 28-mile Green Line, which will operate from Pleasant Grove to Farmers Branch and Carrollton is scheduled to open in December 2010.

The TRE is projected to carry more than 11,000 riders daily by 2010.

The $190 million light rail vehicle conversion is scheduled for completion before the end of 2010.

2011

It was remodeled, rebuilt and transformed into the police headquarters in March 2011.

May 2011 Representatives from DART and the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority sign an interlocal cooperation agreement recognizing the importance of coordinated transportation planning and advocacy as the two agencies work to expand rail in the area.

July 2011 The Dallas-to-Oak Cliff Streetcar project receives environmental clearance with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issuance of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on July 21.

October 2011 For the first time the Chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) is from Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

2014

April 2014 Dallas Area Rapid Transit's two-year paid parking demonstration known as Fair Share Parking and implemented at Northwest Plano Park & Ride, Parker Road, North Carrollton/Frankford and Belt Line stations ended Wednesday, April 2, making it free to park at DART facilities.

2015

The program began locally in 2015.

2016

May 2016 DART took the top spot and was crowned the Grand Champion at the 41st Annual International Bus Roadeo.

2019

December 2019 Officials from agencies across North Texas launched a new nonprofit organization intended to develop transportation opportunities in the growing Dallas County Inland Port.

2020

August 2020 The Engineering Department at DART began installing face mask and hand sanitizer dispensers on all buses, light rail vehicles and streetcars.

2021

June 2021 On Monday, June 14, DART celebrated 25 years of providing light rail service to the residents of North Texas.

2022

The DART Board selects Stadler US for the contract to assemble and build eight FLIRTs (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) and design an Equipment Maintenance Facility (EMF) for the Cotton Belt Regional Rail Project scheduled to go into service in 2022.
