Dewberry company history timeline
A civil engineer by training, Dewberry co-founded the business in 1956 in Arlington.
1958 Richard Davis joins the firm.
In 1964 computers were used by Dewberry engineers for the first time.
It opened in 1965 and was named for Charlestonian L. Mendel Rivers.
1968 Firm's name is changed to Dewberry, Nealon, and Davis.
Within the next 15 years, Barry Dewberry, who joined the company in 1975, said he plans to pass down the company’s leadership once again, perhaps to his younger brother Tom, who just turned 39, or to another younger family member.
Growth and Diversification: 1980-90
Dewberry reached its 25th anniversary in 1981 and with the departure of Nealon shortened its name to Dewberry & Davis.
Fowler, an engineering graduate from the University of Kansas, had been with the firm since 1983 and had played an instrumental role in Dewberry's rise to the top ranks of United States engineering firms.
In 1983 the two firms first began working together on criminal justice projects.
1991 Dewberry Project Managements Inc. is formed.
Co-Founder Steps Down as CEO in 1998
It was vacated and abandoned in 1999 after Hurricane Floyd damaged the building and caused an exposure of asbestos.
Finally, in 1999, Dewberry acquired Anderson-Nichols & Company to expand its Boston office.
He replaced Fowler as CEO in April 2005.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Dewberry established a project office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in September 2005 to coordinate its work with FEMA in its response to the disaster.
Nine years later, John Dewberry, an Atlanta-based real estate developer and part-time Charleston resident, bought the building at an auction in 2008.
On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, The Dewberry opened its doors to the public as Charleston's newest luxury hotel.
