Overlooking Lake Michigan, it was founded in 1920, designed in the Italian Renaissance style by the firm of Marshall and Fox, and soon became one of Chicago's landmark hotels, a longtime rival of the Palmer House.
Designed by the architect Benjamin Howard Marshall and financed by John B. Drake and Tracy Corey Drake, the Drake Hotel was inaugurated on 1920’s New Year’s Eve, with a big ceremony in the presence of more than two thousands among the most distinguished citizens of the city.
Roosevelt also became a central figure at of his many campaign events, serving as her husband’s voice whenever he could not attend. It was Eleanor who encouraged Franklin to remain in politics even after he was beset with polio in 1921.
