Charles H. Dyson founded The Dyson Corporation, a pioneering leveraged buyout firm today known as The Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation (DKM), in 1954, following what was an already impressive resume in business and public service.
Charlie served in senior executive positions at the Textron Corporation and also the Burlington Mills Corporation, and then in 1954 used $8,000 of his own money and a $4 million bank loan to purchase Hubbard and Company.
Charlie and his wife Margaret were strong advocates of the importance of giving back and in 1957 created the Dyson Foundation.
In 1970, Frank Kissner, one of Charlie’s partners, said that “Charlie had the particular trait of attracting the loyalty of people.
In 1978, Charlie made the decision to step down as President of the Foundation and passed the reins to his daughter Anne.
During Anne’s first decade as President, the Foundation's annual giving grew to over $1 million per year, and, after receiving a $20 million endowment upon Margaret Dyson’s death in 1990, giving increased to more than $10 million.
In 1991, Anne hired the Foundation’s first professional staff person, Diana Gurieva, to serve as Executive Director.
Upon Charlie’s retirement from active participation in the business in 1992, his son Robert R. Dyson took up the reins of DKM and currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Charlie Dyson died in 1997.
After Anne’s death in 2000, her brother, Rob Dyson, took on the presidency, carrying on the good works his father and sister had begun.
In 2015, Diana Gurieva, stepped down as Executive Vice President of the Foundation, and Andrea Reynolds, formerly of the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, was hired as Diana’s successor.
