The Floating Hospital company history timeline

1866

On October 19, 1866, the St John’s Guild of Trinity Church founded The Floating Hospital with a clear and singular purpose: “To afford relief to the sick children of the poor of the City of New York without regard to creed, color, or nationality.”

1875

The Floating Hospital has long been associated with the creative soul of NYC. Our first independently owned ship, The Emma Abbott, launched in 1875, was championed for and named after a prominent opera singer of the time.

1894

Day-long excursions began on July 25, 1894, and continued throughout the summer.

The Floating Hospital for Children literally started on a boat in 1894, Bird said.

Floating Hospital for Children was established in 1894 as a hospital ship, sailing in Boston Harbor.

1935

The third Floating Hospital, The Lloyd I. Seaman, was launched on May 30, 1935.

1965

Floating Hospital for Children, now Tufts Children's Hospital, officially merged with Tufts Medical Center in 1965, but still retains its own identity and rich, historic tradition.

1982

In 1982, the hospital moved into a state-of-the-art facility within the Tufts Medical Center complex.
