1876

The paper was first printed on July 6, 1876.

1876 – The Gainesville Sun was first published on this date.

1911

The Alachua County Library District has expanded its digital Gainesville Sun archives to include editions dating back to 1911 that are available to library cardholders who can access the archives at www.aclib.us/GainesvilleSun from any computer.

Users can search by keyword or date and print, email or download PDFs and images from 1911 to the present, as well as browse news articles, legal announcements, advertisements and obituaries in the archives.

1922

During the time it was owned by the Pepper family (specifically in 1922) an editor at the paper openly admitted his membership in the Ku Klux Klan and praised the Klan in print.

1970

Established in 1970, the gallery is among the oldest continuously running artist cooperatives in the country and features fine arts and fine crafts by 50-plus local artists.

1971

In 1971, it was sold to The New York Times Company.

1995

An online edition was launched in 1995, initially called SunOne, and later simply GainesvilleSun.com.

2005

In 2005, it launched The Gainesville Guardian, a weekly paper aimed at East Gainesville and the city's African-American population, to mixed opinions.

2012

On January 6, 2012, The Gainesville Sun was purchased by Halifax Media Group.

2013

It was founded in 2013.

2015

In 2015, Halifax was acquired by New Media Investment Group.

2021

The reopening was made possible with funding the Cotton Club received from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

2022

Santa Fe College Spring Preview 2022 will focus on helping incoming students prepare for transition to college and offer breakout rooms for conversations with advisors, ambassadors and other SF College representatives.
